Beautiful Child
Review of Beautiful Child: The Story of a Child Trapped in Silence and the Teacher Who Refused to Give Up on Her - Torey L. Hayden by EMPORIUM

Advantages: A true story, compelling and emotional
Disadvantages: none

Beautiful Child is a book written by Torey Hayden an educational psychologist and a special -education teacher. Her work chronicled in a series of books, was based in America. This true story is about a young girl who is trapped in silence, and the teacher who refuses to give up on her. As the story unfolds Torey works hard to reach the young girl who is electively mute, trying to encourage her to speak . I found myself not wanting to put this book ...
...this little girls life behind closed doors is unveiled. However with the help and support of Torey and the team, she will find empowerment and be able to achieve a better future. I reccomend this book to anyone working with special needs children and/or who loves emotive stories. It's wonderful. ... Read review

Flash Bang Wallop - What a Story!
Review of Bermondsey Boy: Memories of a Forgotten World - Tommy Steele by nubbler

Advantages: Great story
Disadvantages: I guess you have to like Steele or Sarf London

...Tommy Hicks was born in Bermondsey in 1936. There is some history of Bermondsey and the London borough of Southwark, and in the tradition of the best memoirs this is also a biography of the wider family. Steele includes considerable details of his parents' early poverty, jobs and bereavements. His grandmother was an illegal bookie's runner, father Darbo was a racing tipster, tic-tac man and doorman at a dodgy 'nightclub', and his mother was a tin-basher ...
...account of growing up in Bermondsey before and during the war with its dangers, and the fatal illnesses of three small siblings. A couple of odd, quasi-supernatural encounters are related in a matter-of-fact manner, so the reader can take or leave them. Steele was a bright lad, and admits he always liked being the centre of attention, entertaining his family, sending off 'thrillers' for Enid Blyton's advice, and performing Danny Kaye-ish routines ... Burnt Toast - goes down well for a change!
Review of Burnt Toast - Teri Hatcher by Bex727

Advantages: Will leave you feeling good!
Disadvantages: One for the girls only!

Now, I'm not one for celebrity Biography\'s or autobiography\'s especially by so called celebs who bring out a book after being in the limelight for a couple of years or just because they have been on BB (which Teri isn\'t)!! This book however seemed to scream at me from the shelf. I have always liked Teri Hatcher and having seen her in the press for various bad things happening to her I was intreagued to say the least to hear things from her point ...
...I loved it and couldn't put it down. She is very funny! You fall for her story like that of a blockbuster movie. The book is very personal and she talks very frankly about everything that has happened to her and how she coped, or didn\'t cope as the case may be. You find yourself relating to certain aspects of her story which only helps you be captivated even more. The way this book is written is like you personally, are having a conversation with ... Coleen McLoughlin: Welcome to my world
Review of Welcome to My World - Coleen McLoughlin by louiseyd

Advantages: Cheap, fun and easy to read
Disadvantages: I want her life

I bought this book on a spur of the moment shopping trip, basically because I was interested to see how Coleen went from being a schoolgirl to a WAG in such a short space of time. I was amazed to read her story and see how down to earth she really was, even after being catapulted at amazing speed into the limelight. She was even thoughtful enough to come back to her book and update it with her wedding plans for the release of the paperback edition. ...
...quick life update, within which she includes girly pages with tips on make-up, fashion, nights out and quizzes, making it so much more like a diary. It is really easy to read and highly enjoyable to learn how down to earth she is and how she enjoys nothing more than snuggling on her sofa watching the soaps just like the rest of us. ... Little girl lost.... then found!
Review of Little Girl Lost - Barbie Probert-Wright & Jean Ritchie by sarahbarrow

Advantages: Shows a reverse perspective.
Disadvantages: Heartbreaking at times.

...six, makes this sometimes a little difficult to read and comprehend. ( I have a six year old daughter and the idea of her seeing the atrocities that the author did is heartbreaking to me). Amongst all the fear, desperation, hunger and complete and utter exhaustion is the story of the true hero's of this book……. The people. The true humanitarian feeling you get throughout the entire book is astounding, the people who have nothing and nowhere to ...
...a stranger, the people who fear for their homes due to the "invasion" of the English and like, who at a moments notice, will have someone "billeted" to them, ( this is what they called the refugees, after they were allocated a bed or home in the village they happen to come across) and show the refugees unforgettable kindness by providing a warm bed for the night and a delicious meal to boot. This book is full of sadness, and the stories of the complete ... Read review
