Scrupulously-researched moving biography of a unique character ,
Review of Sex & Drugs & Rock'n'Roll: The Life of Ian Dury - Richard Balls by JOHNV

Advantages: Well-rounded, objective picture of the man and his times
Disadvantages: Lacks index

Ian Dury was a complete one-off. Stricken with polio in childhood, born in middle-class Harrow but determined to shake off such origins to the extent of acquiring a real Cockney accent, he became an art school rebel whose early pub-rock experiences, as front man of Kilburn & the High Roads, led to one frustrating move after another. But he came out smiling, briefly, with the music sea change that was punk and new wave from the end of 1976 onwards ...
...to take Britain by the scruff of the neck, hitting the Top 10 with "What A Waste" and going all the way to No. 1 with "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick". After that it went pear-shaped, and a short career in films and associated avenues beckoned, before he started working for children's and cancer charities, and returning to the music scene as a much-beloved elder statesman of rock. Few will forget those moving last appearances on record and TV with ... Read review

Review of Stiff Little Fingers, Song by Song - Jake Burns, Alan Parker by matsu65

Advantages: A great read
Disadvantages: I could've kept reading another 100 pages

Stiff Little Fingers were one of the most commercially successful punk bands of the late 70's and early 80's. Formed in Belfast in 1977, they were often wrongly accused of cashing in on the troubles in Northern Ireland. Nothing could be further from the truth, their songs were simply about the things they new best, the army on their streets, the paramilitary organisations influence over communities, and above all, being a teenager in a city where ...
...and went "Jesus Christ, Mr Stiff Little Fingers" And I thought "F*** me, Phil Lynott knows who I am' This is a book not just for the loyal SLF fan, or for people who just have a fond memory of them. It's so well written, funny and entertaining I believe anyone would find it an enjoyable read…Go For It! -------------------------------------- Pages: 190 Sanctuary Publishing ISBN 1-86074-513-X Original price £12.99 ... Swipe, Sign, It's All Mine
Review of Save Karyn - Karyn Bosnak by AnitaM

Advantages: A true insight into the world of debt
Disadvantages: You might not agree with her method of trying to clear the debt

...day for a month, she'll save $60 on bus fare so that's like getting the sandals for only $100, can't help but raise a smile. And her responses to some of the emails she receives after setting up the website are very funny. I genuinely believe that she didn't have any idea of the true mess she was really in until it was too late. After all, she was in a well paid job, working in television and on a 6 figure salary. She really thought that she could ...
...her. There is also a poignant moment in the book as this all was happening in 2000 and 2001 and the story crosses September 2001. Events that happened in the world at that time are touched upon as she realises it's not the Prada purses or Gucci sunglasses that are important. The terrorist attack also had personal consequences for Karyn as the light hearted TV shows that she was involved in producing suddenly weren't being watched as people tuned ... Read review

Coleen McLoughlin: Welcome to my world
Review of Welcome to My World - Coleen McLoughlin by louiseyd

Advantages: Cheap, fun and easy to read
Disadvantages: I want her life

I bought this book on a spur of the moment shopping trip, basically because I was interested to see how Coleen went from being a schoolgirl to a WAG in such a short space of time. I was amazed to read her story and see how down to earth she really was, even after being catapulted at amazing speed into the limelight. She was even thoughtful enough to come back to her book and update it with her wedding plans for the release of the paperback edition. ...
...quick life update, within which she includes girly pages with tips on make-up, fashion, nights out and quizzes, making it so much more like a diary. It is really easy to read and highly enjoyable to learn how down to earth she is and how she enjoys nothing more than snuggling on her sofa watching the soaps just like the rest of us. ...
