Cider with Rosie
Advantages: vivid and real Disadvantages: none
"Cider with Rosie" has to be one of my most memorable, poignant and haunting reads. I discovered it when I was 16 in an English class whilst learning about descriptive writing and use of imagery. I didn't have to read it, I was just shown an example of his work, but it lured me in hook line and sinker and I couldn't put the book down.
The book is an evocative memoir of his childhood growing up in a Cotswold village. He captures the time and the ... ...in such a manner that conveys reality - he paints a picture with his words and he excels in this art. I think the opening paragraph is simply magical,
"I was set down from the carrier's cart at the age of three; and there with a sense of bewilderment and terror my life in the village began. The June grass, amongst which I stood, was taller than I was, and I wept. I had never been so close to grass before. It towered above me and all around me, each ...

Life Changing Read
Advantages: Remarkable story of a modern day Saint Disadvantages: none
The fact that this book which was first published in 1980 is still being printed 20 years later is a good indication of the greatness of the contents. The book is an account of how the writer, not sure what to do after leaving college, came to live amongst the most depraved people in the world in the walled city – Hong Kong. Through her Christian faith and prayer she was able to reach out to the inhabitants mostly hardened criminals, pornographers, ... ...change in many of their lives – leading them away from the depraved, breaking the drug addiction and for them to develop into Whole people. This is a remarkable book and gives a strong impression of what it must be like to live in such a “dark place” and for many of the inhabitants their encounter with the writer was the first time they had been shown human kindness. I would find it hard to believe that anyone could read this book and not have a ...

I see a Bad Moon A Rising...
Advantages: honest Disadvantages: Bit dull
All men live a quiet life of desperation, recession of course a breeding ground for that apathy, something women never really understand, expecting them to always be their rock as they grizzle away on their shoulders for the slightest little thing. When men can't deal with the modern pressures of life, often due to women, and mortgages and kids, women all too often walk away from men, their most intrinsic selfish trait by far. We are indifferent ... ...it will ever be, but if we show weakness then the stigma is forever there, depression often the curse of the free thinker who contemplates too much, or the hunter gatherer who can no longer provide, writers some of the most likely to suffer depression. England cricketer Markus Trescothick could hide no longer from his battle with depression, again a needy woman and family life at the centre of the anxiety. He used O-Level Drama (his only one) to ...

Eddie Guerrero Viva La Raza
Advantages: Complete homage to his life - everything you ever wanted to know is given. Disadvantages: The book shows the rebirth of a man, however we know how his story ended.
Eddie Guerrero was simply one of the greatest entertainers of WWE. I never read before this book. It was the first book I bought with the intended purpose of reading it for leisure. For all wrestling fans this is a must read. There is no reason to not read this book. It provides every single detail of his life, family, sexual encounters, drugs, crises, several wrestling promotions. He was so personal in this book and it is a breath of fresh air to ... ...since Mick Foley. Although you may readd this book with empathy if you love him, many will be be able to step back and admire Eddie just through what they have read in this book, not what they have seen on TV. If you have never read a book about a wrestler, this should be the first. If you ever want to know what an excrutiating, exhilirating, emotional, and painful job wrestling can be you must read this. You wont believe half the things he did. ...
