Review of Our Kate - Catherine Cookson by marylou2u

Advantages: Thought provoking, gritty in parts & honest
Disadvantages: none

Dame Catherine Cookson (1906-1998) Our Kate is the autobiographical accounts of Dame Catherine Cookson, struggling with her demons and early childhood memories made the writing of the book especially difficult. In fact it took her over 10 years to complete and was only published in 1969 after her mother passed away. Nothing came easy for this amazing woman, born Katie McMullen in 1906 she talks of her desperate childhood in the North East of England.... ...
...95 million novels sold. Our Kate is compelling reading for lovers of social history in our country. Catherine Cookson allows you to gain knowledge into her triumphs and all too often tragedies. She overcame literary critics disdain that had in the past dismissed her work as romantic nonsense. She took offence to these comments and I agree as Catherine Cookson put a little part of her life into each book whilst challenging the hypocrisy of her own ... Read review

Heavier then Heaven. From the back of the book, Kurt Cobain's life and death fast became rock 'n' roll legend. The world wide success of his band Nirvana, defined the music scene in the early 1990's and there songs spoke to and for a generation. Music journalist Charles cross a veteran of the Seattle music scene relates this extraordinary story of artistic brilliance and the Pain that extinguished it. Heavier the Heaven is the definitive life of ...
...geniuses. Ok so after reading the book I wouldn't Agree with the statement on the back cover. My personal opinion of Kurt Cobain changed little after leaning about him, however I'm not here to dictate my music taste I'm here to review this book. The book was written by music journalist Charles Cross who lived near the gun shop were Kurt Cobain bought the Remington shotgun he used to kill him self in 1994. With over 400 interviews to back up his ... Read review

Castaneda's Menagerie
Review of The Eagle's Gift - Carlos Castaneda by dragonhelmuk

Advantages: Mythology and Mysticism, Storyline and Exophoric Cultural Reference
Disadvantages: Confusing and Incoherent, Dull and Dubious, Culture Shock, Focuses on the Trivial

The Eagle is an ineffable and terrifying force beyond comprehension. It lives on the awareness' of those who die, snuffing them out like candles. The Eagle's Gift however, is the ability to retain awareness beyond death. Not the ability to live forever, for that is impossible, but the ability to keep a part of your "self". This can only be accomplished through "the art of sorcery" which is made up of two disciplines ("stalking" and "dreaming"). If ...
...of "Warrior" can enter the third state of consciousness "intent" then you can "dart past the Eagle and be free". And perhaps more importantly, never be eaten. I have no idea how. The book didn't say... So, are you still all with me? If yes, good! That's about as simple as it gets. If no, oh dear! Perhaps you would be better off with another less confusing and irritating book. So just to bring us all up to speed then, The Eagle's Gift is the sixth ... Read review
