Please, Daddy, No
Review of Please, Daddy, No: A Boy Betrayed - Stuart Howarth by STELAINE

Advantages: A great read
Disadvantages: A bit to graphic

I was recently given this book to read by a family member, and to be honest when I asked her what the story was about I was quite dubious as to whether I wanted to read it or not as this is not the type of story I would personally go for myself. I must say though that once I started reading I could not put it down and had completed it in two days. This book has twenty chapters, an acknowledements page and an Introduction which goes : " There are ...
...abuse on a daily basis. You can turn a blind eye and consider this too nasty to read about, or you can take a courageous step forward and share a few moments from my world. We can only bring about change by doing something postitve and being prepared to listen. This is my story." The book as a whole, is a mans biography of how he spent his childhood being abused both mentally and sexually by his step father. All he wants is for his father to love ... Read review

a great biography book
Review of Next to You - Gloria Hunniford by claire_123

Advantages: A story full of love, courage and positivity
Disadvantages: the ending

I'm not a huge reader, i tend to read books about girls in the sun when im sunbathing on a beach on my own holidays! I've never read, or been interested in reading a biography. I dont knwo exactly what drew me to read this book in the first place but once i'd started i couldn't put it down. A thorough description of her childhood helps set the scene for the whole book and puts in place the strong loving bond that runs through the whole book. The ...
...should be an inspiration to everybody, not just with illness. It's initally very upsetting but as you get into the book you feel as though you can see how Caron coped and it becomes less upsetting and more uplifting. In the end, although you are prepared for what is coming, it is heart breaking. This book is amazing and has converted me to go on and read other biographies. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone with time to read. ... Read review

TORMENTIL
Review of The Boy with No Shoes - William Horwood by fantasybeliever

Advantages: Beautifully written, moving, sharp and tormenting story.
Disadvantages: Slow in parts, not as comprehensive as an "auto-biography"

...he created classics such as the Duncton Chronicles and Skallagrig - one of my all time favourite books. When I discovered "The Boy With No Shoes" I was shocked to discover that this was the painful story of the author's childhood not ever having imagined that he could come from such a harsh physical, and particularly barren emotional background. The story is told set in the fictional coastal town of "Stoning" in Kent during the post Second World ...
...from boyhood into adult life, the place settings and characters are all fictitious but clearly based on the important people in the author's life. I would describe Horwood as a literary artist; the way in which he constructs language so that it translates into "images" is a skill that very few writers possess. The only other writer that I've encountered who stirs such an emotional reaction in me through the way they write prose is Sir Bob Geldof ... Read review

Tigers Child
Review of The Tiger's Child - Torey Hayden by gailzlegz

Advantages: Excellent to see how shelia is getting along in life
Disadvantages: Can be a bit repetative.

'Tigers Child' written by the great Torey Hayden. Torey is a special needs teacher and psychologist, her stories are true and based on troubled children she comes into contact with via the classroom. 'Tigers Child' is the follow on to 'One Child' which I have written a brief review on. My husband bought this book for me so I'm not sure how much it cost and where he got it from(probably WHSmiths),but the rrp is £5.99. It's quite tricky written ...
...remember Shelia's and Toreys background. The story is set seven years later when Shelia comes back into Toreys life and is needing her help and guidance again. Shelia is now a teenage with masses of orange hair, but no longer troubled like she had been in 'One Child' although she is still searching for some answers.Torey has her work cut out to help Shelia, but this time it is to help her with her teenage years and make her way through to womanhood. ... Beautiful Child
Review of Beautiful Child: The Story of a Child Trapped in Silence and the Teacher Who Refused to Give Up on Her - Torey L. Hayden by EMPORIUM

Advantages: A true story, compelling and emotional
Disadvantages: none

Beautiful Child is a book written by Torey Hayden an educational psychologist and a special -education teacher. Her work chronicled in a series of books, was based in America. This true story is about a young girl who is trapped in silence, and the teacher who refuses to give up on her. As the story unfolds Torey works hard to reach the young girl who is electively mute, trying to encourage her to speak . I found myself not wanting to put this book ...
...this little girls life behind closed doors is unveiled. However with the help and support of Torey and the team, she will find empowerment and be able to achieve a better future. I reccomend this book to anyone working with special needs children and/or who loves emotive stories. It's wonderful. ... Read review
