Stone carves a monumental biography
Review of The Agony and the Ecstasy - Irving Stone by
MAFARRIMOND
Advantages: Discriptions of Sculptures and Frescos. Italian Renaissance.
Disadvantages: Subjective interpretation. Lengthy and sometimes difficult to read.
...year old Michelangelo Buonarroti began the carving of the 17ft marble statue the Biblical King David. Now renowned as a masterpiece of Renaissance art, David is regarded as a symbol both of strength and youthful human beauty. To mark the 500th anniversary, New American Library released a special edition of Irving Stone’s biography of the artist- “The Agony and The Ecstasy.”
“The Agony and The Ecstasy” has achieved a reputation of a masterpiece in ... ...Michelangelo but THE biography.
No-one can criticise Irving Stone’s dedication and commitment to his novel. He worked on the novel for six years researching primary sources in Florence, Rome, Carrara and Bologna. He studied all of Michelangelo’s existing 495 letters as well as a vast amount of other Renaissance documentation. He even learned how to carve marble to be able to portray the act realistically. A lot of time out of anyone’s life!! But ...

Gubbins came out to Montreux
Review of The Autobiography of Deep Purple - Ian Gillan by
Vodkaboy
Advantages: Easy to read, some nice insights
Disadvantages: Leaves as much unsaid as said
Deep Purple were one of the most influential rock bands of the 70s; although most fans would say it is not one of their favourite songs, "Smoke on the Water" is, possibly, the most recogniseable riff of the last 40 years, featuring Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Jon Lord on keyboards, Roger Glover on bass, Ian Paice on drums and, on vocals, the subject of this autobography: Gubbins!! I've been a fan of Deep Purple for a long time, in particular the ... ...went on to put together The Ian Gillan Band, subsequently known just as Gillan, I liked several of the albums that he produced. When Deep Purple reformed, with him handling vocal duties, it was an absolute thrill seeing their UK comeback gig at Knebworth (which was recorded and released as a live album) and of course the roller coaster continued as Gillan left, briefly fronted Black Sabbath - something of a surprise all round - then came back to ...

For anyone who has never heard of Dog the Bounty Hunter, this is a good place to start. A must read for anyone of any age. Great booky wook!
Review of My Booky Wook - Russell Brand by
lelabella
Advantages: great insite into russels life
Disadvantages: explixit in some areas
Great book, gives a real insite to the rocky life of Russel Brand and also explains a lot about why he is like he is. I never liked Russel Brand until i read this book, i now understand his comedy as i now feel that i know more about him and understand the backround about his humour. In the book he explains about how he went through childhood dealing with his mothers illness and how he got into drugs and how he got to where he is now. We also see ... ...and he explains this in such a comical matter. there are some great pictures in this book of russel in his child hood and his family. Overall great book must read for anyone with a sense of humor or for someone who is just looking for a good read, i don't read much but i have read this many times over and still get the same enjoyment from it. ...

The diary of a young girl
Review of The Diary of Anne Frank - Anne Frank by
nettie82
Advantages: Evocative, heart rending
Disadvantages: Sad, should never have had to have been written in the first place
A brilliant read.
The young Anne Frank writes with perception and eloquence most people can only dream of when they are fully grown! Plus, her story is of such an exceptional nature that the subject matter alone is enough to create fascination.
Reading the book from beginning to end, you really do see the change in Anne Frank's character, from her childish beginnings to her more mature outlook towards the end. One can only guess at how difficult ...
