Keeping It All Together
Review of Keeping Mum - Brian Thompson by
nubbler
Advantages: A good read
Disadvantages: BIt depressing
THE WRITER
Brian Thompson was born in Lambeth, London, in 1935. His childhood was divided between Cambridge and Lambeth. Thompson eventually read English at Cambridge, and is also a playwright and biographer.
HIS STORY
To some extent this belongs within the ‘my miserable childhood’ genre, including not only relative poverty but also severe neglect by both parents, who appear to most onlookers to be merely extremely selfish. Yet Brian’s mother ... ...the point of sociopathy. Thompson Senior volunteers for RAF flight duty during WW2 and is obviously away from home most of the time. Meanwhile his wife, in her depression and loneliness, turns to befriending American troops, to local scandal. Some temporarily befriend Brian. Her husband never forgives her, although his own behaviour is far from creditable.
As his mother's illness becomes worse, young Brian is evacuated out of Cambridge and into ...

Jodie Marsh.Keeping it real
Review of Keeping it real - Jodie Marsh by
rosierozi
Advantages: Juicy book, with tons of gossip!
Disadvantages: May set younger readers hormones into overdrive!
I have not wrote a review for a while on here,so I thought i'd give it another go.
I must admit I havnt achully picked up a book for a number of years and after getting back into the swing of things by reading 'Wuthering Heights',I decided that I'd give a book a go that didnt drain me of every tear I had to cry,and would be a little more 'easy reading'.
I picked up 'Keeping it real' on Ebay for 1.60p,which I thought was quite a bargain,as if I ... ...I also thought that the title 'Keeping it real' was a bit of a laugh due to the way Jodie looks!..sorry!
I achully take that back though after reading it thoroughly.
You may wonder who Jodie Marsh is?,Well shes basically a girl thats famous for partying all night, having strings of relationships with celebrity men and basically rivalling Jordan in the 'How much flesh can you flash'? stakes.
This book promised to be juicy reading, and it certainly ...

Kilo 17. The Secret War Against the Drug Smugglers
Review of Kilo 17 - Harry Ferguson by
Martinscholes
Advantages: Fantastic, gripping pacy story
Disadvantages: None
...and had the code number Kilo 17. He found himself in some instances possessing powers that dated back hundreds of years that not even police officers possess. He also found himself facing men who, although they like to give themselves a veneer of respectability, not even their own family members were safe from their wickedness and perversions...
Although Harry was based in the south east, he saw action all over the UK and abroad, working with other ... ...at times.
He introduces us to the other members of his team, former SAS officers, hardened ID investigators and The Widow, his mysterious and tougher than nails boss. Some of his colleague resented him because of his MI6 background, others he got on with well.
Harry pulls no punches about the terrible strain that his job (often being on call via pager 24 hours a day) put on his marriage.
He meets informants, and the strangest of these is a private ...

Karina
Review of Karina has Down Syndrome - Cheryl Rogers, Gun Dolva by
bluejules
Advantages: *
Disadvantages: *
...book describes the developmental stages Karina reaches. As these are later than a typical child, I felt really pleased when she reached them. I felt as though someone was telling me about a child I knew, and I felt almost as emotional about it. There is also information about the professional help that Karina received in the early years of her life. I think this will be helpful to new parents of a child with special needs. There are contact details ... ...helpful to British parents)
Karina has an older sister and a younger brother and I enjoyed reading about the family as a whole even though the book is focused mainly on Karina. It was nice to read how the family coped and I enjoyed reading about things they did together.
~ What did I think and would I recommend it? ~
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was nicely written and I was interested in learning about the development of this lovely ...

Nikita And His Little Corner Of The World
Review of Khrushchev - William Tauber by
JoePoirot
Advantages: Readable and illuminating
Disadvantages: May not interest the average reader
Nikita Khruschev is a curious figure in the history of the twentieth century – no, he was not the subject of Elton John’s hit record, at least I don’t think so! Khruschev emerged from the infighting and power struggle in the post-Stalin Soviet Union to become the undisputed leader of the nation for seven years.
At first sight the fascination with this character is how somebody so physically unprepossessing, with such limited intellectual ... ...scholarly but immensely readable biography goes some way to clarifying this enigma. Khruschev was born into poverty in what is now the Ukraine. Old enough to participate in the Russian Revolution, and the succeeding Civil War, but not old enough to have been a figure of any importance in it, Khruschev was the classic story of the apparatchik who rose way beyond his, and everybody else’s, expectations. He climbed the greasy pole through the ...
