Review of Awight Now: Setting the Record Straight - Michael Barrymore by brockysbird

Advantages: great read an absolute must have
Disadvantages: none

I purchased this book in November of 2006 from Asda at the price of £9.96, I loved Michael Barrymore in Big Brother and that is the reason why I opted for this book! (He should have won!!!!) Michael was once one of britans favorite entertainers; he regularly appeared on TV and was loved by the public for being so funny and so unique. We first saw Michael in 1975 when he won the talent show 'New faces' from then on he became a familiar and loved ...
...shows included Barrymore Strike it lucky My kind of people My kind of music And kids say the funniest things Michael Barrymore also won 13 national TV awards including best entertainment show, most popular comedy performer and even a special recognition award ...with a raft of other awards Despite all of his success he got heavily into drink and drugs and in 1997 he split from his wife of 18 years, this was when he admitted to being gay. Then ... Read review

Less, not Morrie!
Review of Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man and Life's Greatest Lesson - Mitch Albom by sungold98

Advantages: Short
Disadvantages: Patronising

Oh dear - I'm going to sound like a party-pooper again. I was offered this book to read by a well-meaning friend, and read it on his recommendation. The reason he thought that I would like it is that I was diagnosed with cancer in 2003 and published the diary i kept during the first year after my diagnosis (It's called The Purple Butterfly, if anyone is interested). This book is about a man called Mitch who starts to visit the terminally ill Morrie, ...
...about the way he reacts to Morrie's illness, not so much about Morrie. Anyway, I read the book. Perhaps it was too soon after my own diagnosis, or perhaps I just didn't like the tone, but I am afraid I didn't like it. Sorry to all those people who did, but this is my opinion. I think I was looking at it from Morrie's point of view. Who wants a do-gooder younger, fit man coming around and giving you sympathy? No-one. Who wants a do-gooder younger ... Read review

An excellent insight
Review of Geisha of Gion - Mineko Iwasaki by tirial

Advantages: Intriguing, gives an insight into the geisha world
Disadvantages: Occasionally stilted, author bias is pronounced.

...the actual truth of the geisha world. Mineko was the highest ranked of the geisha, and as such had to contend with jealousy, insults and assault during her period of fame. She also has an insight into the way the geisha world was run as she was trained to take over the teahouse where she lived. "Geisha of Gion" covers Mineko's childhood, becoming a geisha, her training and eventually leaving the Geisha world and her retirement. It is a fascinating ...
...role and the more modern geisha than the classical era they are usually portrayed in. However this is the story of a geisha, not geisha in general, and would need to be read with other books by readers trying to get a picture of the modern geisha's role. In places the writing style is stilted, but this may be more the translation than the author, and the content covered is intriguing and detailed enough to keep you reading. Colour plates in the ... You Fat Bar-Steward !!
Review of Who Ate All The Pies: The Life & Times of Mick Quinn - Mick Quinn by newty1977

Advantages: Endearing story of rags to riches
Disadvantages: Do you like Football?

...from the streets of Liverpool, who made it into the big time and was idolised from the football terraces. Who would have thought such a scruffy big-framed bloke could be such a lethal predator and goal machine? Described by The Independent as "A rags-to-riches story featuring a scouse scally with a heart of gold" ~~~~~~~ The Book ~~~~~~~ Without alienating possibly 50% of my audience right away, I do feel that this is a book that will be more ...
...quite a few female friends who would thoroughly enjoy this book, at least just to get into the male psyche and understand what makes us tick… Not much! (Well, not in my case anyway. No seriously, just insert 6 AA batteries and I start up). So, who is Mick Quinn? The first chapter, entitled "Who The Fuck Is Mick Quinn?" goes some way to putting you in the picture, but doesn't start at the beginning of his life, instead opting to describe his Newcastle ... My life with John Thaw

Advantages: A good read
Disadvantages: None

I saw The two of us my life with John Thaw advertised and as i am a fan of John Thaw i had to go out and buy the book for myself. I bought the hardback book at £16.99 and a few weeks later it had dropped in price. I read my life with John Thaw by Sheila Hancock in a few days as i couldn't put the book down. It is Sheila Hancock telling her story of when she met John who was 10 years her junior and his time through his battle with cancer. It includes ...
...are a few photos of Sheila Hancock and John Thaw through the book from being at a young age up til present of writing te book. For me this is a book i could read again and i would recommend people to read it as it is a good read. ... Read review
