A cracking good read
Review of Diaries 1969-1979: The Python Years - Michael Palin by
ScottishWestie
Advantages: Funny, serious, compelling reading
Disadvantages: Large book
...is extracts from Michael Plain's diaries & it makes compelling reading. It covers his life from 1969-1979 & thus covers the Monty Python years including the films such as the 'Life of Brian' that were made in the 1970s. It's a big hardback book but paperback versions are now available.
Michael Pailn is very endearing character famous for his comedy writing & acting (including serious roles) & recently as a travel writer & presenter. His diary covers ... ...the struggles to get the programme on air as well as the internal problems with his co writers. If you are a Monty Python fan, this book is a must as it covers a lot of things that were never exposed in the public domain before.
There are funny sections & many sad ones too, involving his father's health, but despite the size of the book the reader can quite easily leave it & come back to it days later & never lose any interest. It is well written ...

My life with John Thaw
Review of The Two Of Us - My Life With John Thaw by
giantpanda21
Advantages: A good read
Disadvantages: None
I saw The two of us my life with John Thaw advertised and as i am a fan of John Thaw i had to go out and buy the book for myself. I bought the hardback book at £16.99 and a few weeks later it had dropped in price.
I read my life with John Thaw by Sheila Hancock in a few days as i couldn't put the book down. It is Sheila Hancock telling her story of when she met John who was 10 years her junior and his time through his battle with cancer. It includes ... ...are a few photos of Sheila Hancock and John Thaw through the book from being at a young age up til present of writing te book. For me this is a book i could read again and i would recommend people to read it as it is a good read. ...

Marymoose gets kinky!
Review of Confessions of a Working Girl - Miss S. by
marymoose99
Advantages: It's certainly enlightening!
Disadvantages: Might offend some people.
Please note, Ciao's product description "Intuition is not some magical property..." is not for this book, thanks to Jesi for pointing this out!
Introduction
Conscious of the fact that my supply of books was starting to get a bit low, I picked some random books off the charity book list at work (for 25p each). Normally I check books out on Amazon first to see what they're about, but I took a chance with this one as it was in the autobiography ... ...my hard earned cash!
Getting the book
When I received "Confessions of a Working Girl" I took one look at the cover and thought "Chick Lit" (you can see the picture!). I'm not a girly girl I have to say, and rarely read the 'chick lit' genre, so I was initially a bit apprehensive. However, on reading the blurb on the back I was assured that it was a true story, so was fairly eager to get stuck in.
The Book Itself
The book is set ...

Girl Power - Tudor Style
Review of Bess of Hardwick: First Lady of Chatsworth - Mary S. Lovell by
luckyarchers
Advantages: Extremely well researched and presented facts.
Disadvantages: Style slightly too academic for me.
...Girls. This biography, Bess of Hardwick: First Lady of Chatsworth, is her latest published work. Her next book is due to be a family biography called The Churchills.
She lives in the New Forest area of Hampshire and is interested in horses, aviation and sailing. She also likes travelling and is a member of The Royal Geographical Society. *** Peak District Connections ***
I love relaxing in the Peak District, and as a result of spending many happy ... ...a lot about Bess of Hardwick, through visiting property once owned by her, and wanted to find out more.
This book tells in academic detail her rise to become the second wealthiest women in Elizabeth I's England, having acquired much property in the Midlands including the Chatsworth Estate and Harwick Halls (both new and old versions).
The author appears to want to accept no previous research into this lady at face value. (Inaccurate "facts" have ...

War Journalism at its finest
Review of Going to Wars - Max Hastings by
bigrupes
Advantages: Not to long
Disadvantages: none
This book describes the exploits of Max Hastings as a journalist travelling from War to war.
The book starts by describing Max's ambition to be a soldier and charts his progress from cadet to TA soldier and Officer Cadet. Un beknown to me Mr Hastings had actually earn't his Parachute wings and Beret by doing a P-Company with the cadets at the age of 17 and he completed 7 jumps - no mean thing for a 17 year old. However Max is very honest in his ... ...then goes on to descibe all the wars that he covered which ranged from the wars in Africa to the Yon Kippur war culminating in his exploits with the task force in the South Atlantic and the Battle to retake the Falkland Islands. His final chapter descibes his brief trip to the Gulf War but only as an arm chair journalist, which he confesses, was just what he wanted to do.
It is a fascinating book and makes light of some very nasty situations and ...
