A Compelling Story
Review of Long Walk to Freedom - Nelson Mandela by ICATJAM

Advantages: Informative
Disadvantages: Inexperienced readers may find it long and linguistically difficult

At last I found the quality time in my life to read the story of this living legend. The story of just a man but a man with the strongest convictions of any man in history. A man who lived through his imprisonment to see his dream begin. I say begin because as we know there are still many injustices in his country which are not yet ironed out. Mnay things have been said in previous reveiws and I shall not attempt to repeat them. i only say that this ... Read review

Killing Bono?
Review of I was Bono's Doppelganger - Neil McCormick by sallycinnamon78

Advantages: Hilarious, candid, intelligently written, tons of anecdotes.
Disadvantages: An air of desperation; an overly harsh dose of realism for wannabes.

...can be spirit crushing. This, I would imagine, becomes even more frustrating when you're life-long friends with one of the most famous men in the world. Neil McCormick, who in musical terms has had more unlucky breaks that I've had hot dinners, has coped with not achieving the star existence he envisioned for himself while watching his friend Bono become one of the biggest stars of the past quarter century. This wasn't an easy road for McCormick ...
...The only disadvantage I found here is that my sympathy with McCormick became stretched - I found myself wanting to shake the author occasionally, as he fails again and again to get where he wants to be. It is certainly brave to air your life's grievances in public, but this constant barrage of depression starts to grate, despite the humour. When questioned about this in an interview, the man himself says: "Thinking about myself as a young man was ... Read review

One for the Bhoys (and the Foxes)
Review of Neil Lennon: Man and Bhoy - Neil Lennon by carcraig

Advantages: Candid account, frighteningly honest
Disadvantages: Dull in parts for fans of other clubs

Fans of Man City, Crewe, and now Nottingham Forest will find this an interesting read. Supporters of Leicester City and Celtic will simply devour it, as it covers golden periods for both clubs. Northern Ireland diehards will find some chapters uncomfortable - but this is a warts-and-all story, and all the better for it. It does, after all, cover his battle with depression, serious injury, sectarianism, and rejection (initially by Motherwell, and ...
...few football clubs and the odd girlfriend or two).It also contains the amazing revelation of his initial team position… Lenny is a living legend to Celtic fans and the inside story of the Road to Seville (the May 2003 UEFA Cup Final V Jose Mourinho's FC Porto) is superbly related. Generally speaking, no matter who you support, if the fans of your greatest rivals (in Lenny's case, Rangers) are driven to foaming apoplexy just by the sight of him, ... Read review

This Ain't Love
Review of Dalek I Loved You - Nick Griffiths by Soho_Black

Advantages: Some vaguely amusing anecdotes
Disadvantages: They're few and far between

A friend of mine, knowing I’m a “Doctor Who” fan, recommended this to me as being very funny. Indeed, it’s kind of funny that there is even the option to buy a book such as this. The return of “Doctor Who” has suddenly made it the kind of program that a man in his 30s can admit to liking. In years past, I would never have considered buying a book like this, as I would never have wanted anyone knowing I watched “Doctor Who”, much less enjoyed it. ...
...this book. Until the return of the series around three years ago, being a “Doctor Who” fan was something you kept quiet; for fear that people would think you a nerd. Before then, a “Doctor Who” fan was someone who hung around “Outpost Gallifrey” and wrote fan fiction and the description would possibly have fitted relatively well. However, since the return of the series, everything has changed. It’s no longer aimed purely at making children hide ... Read review

Paul O'Grady is back on top
Review of Paul O'Grady: The Biography - Neil Simpson by sewbizzie

Advantages: Very interesting read and full of information
Disadvantages: none

Paul O'Grady is a well know day time television presenter. He started out on his own show on ITV but soon moved over to channel 4. Almost as well know as Paul is his beloved dog Buster. The biography has been written by Neil Simpson and gives a wonderful and very detailed insight into the man himself and his childhood and also his alter-ego Lilly Savage. THE BOOK The book has been split into 16 chapter, Introduction - Live at Five 1 - the Boys ...
...into what it takes for Paul to go out everyday and do his show. It then moves on to the first chapter where we learn all about Paul's family. They were an Irish family which moved to a Liverpool working class district. Paul grew up in a big extended family and it was at this time when he became a great friend with Cilla Black. We hear how Paul's door was always open and the neighbours were always filling their house and the men of the area were always ... Read review
