A Boy Betrayed

Advantages: An insight into the lives of those whom are abused
Disadvantages: Extremely sad and disturbing

A lot of the books I tend to read are true stories, most of which tend to upset me when I am reading them but nonetheless i still keep buying more and more true stories to read. One book in particular which I read recently upset me a great deal and it was pretty hard to read the book without feeling disgusted and sick. This book was called Please Daddy No which was written by Stuart Howarth – I think that by the name of the book you get a rough idea ...
...and disturbing book which will bring most of us to tears – admittedly this has to be one of the saddest and most horrific books I have read in a long time. The book is written by Stuart Howarth – and the story is all about his life the abuse he suffered and how it affected his life right up to adulthood. The book takes us way back to when Stuart was a little boy aged 5 and this is when the abuse started – Stuart lived on a council estate in Manchester ...

More fun in the household

Advantages: Great book if you love Deric Longden's writing
Disadvantages: You would be better starting with an earlier book if new to his writing

...to arrive from Amazon. Paws in the Proceedings is the latest in a line of books which looks at life in the Longden household and, given the title, I was hoping it would make a lovely follow on from 'The cat that came in from the cold' and 'Enough to make a cat laugh' which were his two previous book about the felines in his life. It sort of does that because woven throughout the book is the tale of the latest arrival, Nokia, and how he fits in with ...
...it also continues with varied tales of Deric and Aileen's life and the numerous problems that befall them and their extended family. I read this book within a couple od days of receiving it which is testament to the fact that I enjoyed it and because it is formed from lots of little tales of Deric's escapades it is quite easy to find sensible breaks to put it down which would make it an ideal book to dip into and out of. Deric's humour is as good ...

Not sensational, but an honest memoir

Advantages: Soul-baring and quite moving in places
Disadvantages: He comes across as rather intolerant at times

I approached this book with mixed feelings. During my formative years in the 60s and 70s I went through phases of liking 'Sensational!' Tony Blackburn, then finding him tiresome, forgetting about him and then belatedly discovering that he'd battled his way back and won a huge measure of respect from the media. Ghostwritten by music journalist Mark Paytress, 'Poptastic' is an autobiography of the man who was once the country's most successful and ...
...to form, the book is infuriating in places, but it's also soul-baringly honest in parts, and I for one found it difficult to put down. Born in Guildford in 1943, the son of a doctor, Blackburn was always a mass of contradictions. He was the typical clean-cut kid, born into a professional middle-class family but who became a lifelong vegetarian in childhood for unashamedly ethical reasons (the cruelty issue), a singer, guitarist and songwriter who ...

Meet the Man who has met everyone!

Advantages: fascinating read
Disadvantages: none

I know that he's not everyone's cup of tea, but I have always enjoyed watching Michael Parkinson interview his guests on his talk show over the years. I particularly enjoyed his last series on ITV and was sad to discover that he was hanging up his microphone and there were to be no more. When I spotted his autobiography on Amazon it went straight on my wish list and luckily, Santa very kindly delivered it on Christmas Day! I always prefer autobiographies ...
...a person has to say about themselves, even if it is with the aid of a ghost writer. I should be very surprised if Michael Parkinson needde to use one of these considering his journalist background, and in fact, one of the things I really liked about this book was that I could almost hear him speaking in that well known Yorkshire accent! It was a very good read and I discovered many things about the man I did not know. Primarily, I have only been ...

Was this man another James Dean?

Advantages: Interesting biography of a shortlived talent who never realised his potential
Disadvantages: Rather too much about his family background in the early pages

The American musician and singer Gram Parsons was in effect rock music's James Dean. He died too young (in 1973, aged 26) to have achieved much, but in going to an early grave he seems to have achieved this iconic status of one of the 20th century's legendary might-have-been-greats if only he had lived longer. ‘Born to a wealthy Southern-Gothic family of alcoholics and suicides are the first words of the blurb’. So the odds were rather stacked against ...
...carried the self-destruct gene in his soul. His father committed suicide two days before Christmas Day 1958 while Ingram, to give him his full name, was still a boy. His mother died of acute alcoholic poisoning a few years later, though how much Gram's much-hated stepfather helped her on her way is still hotly debated by surviving members of the family. Like many others of his generation, Gram found a release of sorts in his passion for rock music, ...
