Peter Kaye: volume 1?

Advantages: Funny family chap
Disadvantages: No celeb stuff

The book, like the retro comic in question, is a simple and honest read. No long words or pretentious reasoning, just one man telling his story. They say you should only write what you know, and that is exactly what Peter has done here, quite literally! Everything he ever did, however mundane, seems to have ended up in this book, and for that reason alone I don’t think this will appeal to all, especially as he doesn’t include his rise to fame and ...
...£18.95 on it, the autobiography abruptly coming to halt just as we get going. Maybe its part one of his autobiography. Who knows? Maybe he feels guilty about his fame and fortune and by telling more funny stories on his homely normal life is enough for the Jolly Bolton boy for now, working class guilt getting the better of him. He certainly hints that way at the start of this limited but friendly tome, quipping that ‘he feels someday soon someone ...

A Railway with a difference

Advantages: A true story of one man's courage
Disadvantages: Very distressing at times

...How wrong I was! The RRP on this is £7.99, although if you shop around, it can be found online for a lot less (try Amazon marketplace for a price of about £3). I always shop around for my books, as I am a bit of a tightwad haha! But seriously I will happily pay for a second hand copy of a book, as sometimes it is just too expensive to buy it new. Anyway, I digress and should really get back to the review of this book. Eric Lomax (the author) lived ...
...there, he attended school, joined the scouts, and developed a love of trains. I would not compare him to the normal idea of a trainspotter dressed in an anorak and carrying a notebook. But his love of the railway was more a love of the engineering and technical feats that made trains and railways. In time, WW2 broke out and Lomax joined the Royal Signals. At first his job was more staying where he was and learning about radios but eventually he ...

Like cats? You must read this book!

Advantages: Giggle-out-loud funny, charming, immensely accessible, honest.
Disadvantages: Unusually, absolutely nothing!

...that it was one of the best literary investments she could ever have made. This charming little tome drags the reader on a lovely journey of enlightenment and discovery, as writer Deric Longden comes to the wonderful realisation that he is, in fact, a Cat's Best Friend. It all begins when he spots his next door neighbour's new kitten sitting on an upturned bucket in the yard. When the day turns rainy and the little mite is still out in the cold, ...
...new love affair culminates in the sneaky adopting of the kitten, and the story runs from there. Fears of sheepskin rugs, drunken misbehavior with spilt wine, climbing trees, a pet sultana called Ralph, and all sorts of other scrumptious quirks and mishaps ensue as Deric and his kitten bond, culminating in Aileen - who is almost blind - shutting him in the fridge with a pack of Danish bacon. The wonderful image of Deric thawing him out in a shrunken ...

The opening chapter sees Phinn arrive at Backwatersthwaite School after a desperate 2 hour search to find it, ...

A Monster And His Subject

Advantages: Interesting subject
Disadvantages: Unbalanced and rambling

Roger Lewis biography of the late Peter Sellers, another ex-Goon but better known for his many successful films with the Pink Panther series probably being the most popular, was first published in 1994. However this book became the basis for the eponymous film "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers", starring Geoffrey Rush, and has thus acquired a new lease of life. I prefer to leave the conclusions to my reviews until the end, sadly Lewis does not ...
...i.e. "the biographer". I use the inverted commas advisedly as this is the most vile piece of character assassination I have ever come across. Sellers had a chequered life and career. He came from humble beginnings and there was a music-hall background through his grandparents. During the war he perfected his amazing facility for vocal impersonations - he would, for example, stroll into an officers mess and enjoy the facilities by pretending to be ...
