Opposites Detract
Review of The Kenneth Williams Diaries - Kenneth Williams by
Trev15
Advantages: See Op
Disadvantages: See Op
...This is probably one of the reasons - no, let's be honest, this is the reason - I bought Kenneth Williams' diaries. It certainly wasn't out of admiration for the man: I'd always found him annoying. Sure, I liked the 'Carry On' saga, of which Williams was an integral component but I ignored him and just enjoyed the others. That isn't to take anything away from his abilities as a comedy actor, I believe he did have superb timing and equisite delivery, ... ...around the world. It's just that he was always too nasal and vocally grating for me. I know, features of which are loved by others. But I couldn't resist the diaries. Did I feel any different after reading the 40+ years of journals? No, if anything I disliked him even more, but I did feel so very sorry for him. Such a lonely and emotionally barren man. I pitied him. I really did. His upbringing was a typical working class affair, nothing out of the ...

Tales of a fast lady.
Review of Spreading My Wings - Diana Barnato Walker by
Nige7Whit
Advantages: Fascinating historical account of a remarkable woman.
Disadvantages: None
If you're into the history of aviation, you should love this book, it charts the action packed life and adventures of a woman born in 1918 to a somewhat wealthy family, and her exploits in the Air Transport Auxilliary (ATA) as a ferry pilot, delivering new aircraft from factories to the fighting squadrons in World War 2, often without radios or navigation equipment (which presented a hazard on it's own).
Later, after the war, she continued flying, ...

Radio 2's T.W......No not the Sir one!!
Review of My Life on a Hillside Allotment - Terry Walton by
plod591
Advantages: A super read and useful too.
Disadvantages: None for me.
...man, I am careful with my brass!!
My Life on a Hillside Allotment is Terry's own account of his life story from childhood to the current day.
The Book.
After an opening acknowledgement by the author, there follows a foreword by Jeremy Vine, which is brilliantly written and extols the virtues of Terry, his infectious spirit and enthusiasm for his passion and is a joy to read that alone.
There is an introduction passage entitled 'The adopted allotment' ... ...reading that, I shall view my extremely large garden in a totally different light, thanks Terry.
My opinion.
A very interesting read, not merely because of the many interesting gardening tips but a man whose passion for his allotment is unending and this feeling is clearly expressed with the undoubted effort put into passing this to the reader. It is a book I would readily recommend to anyone who enjoys a biography of an ordinary bloke finding ...

A Few Lines From Danniella...
Review of The Other Side Of Nowhere - Danniella Westbrook by
KarenUK
Advantages: Interesting read, great anti-drugs message, informative.
Disadvantages: Needs to be proof-read better, could do with more details on her life in general.
...So I checked round for the best prices and found it available on Ebay, brand new for only £5. I started reading it the day it arrived and had finished it all in two days, but could easily have read it all straight off, if I'd had the time and no distractions.
I love reading autobiographies, but The Other Side Of Nowhere isn't exactly an autobiography. Danniella was interviewed on This Morning last week and explained that it wasn't a kiss-and-tell ... ...Danniella's book isn't only about the topic covered. We do get to find out quite a lot about her childhood, her upbringing and family and her career. She describes her comfortable middle class background, her time at the famous Sylvia Young school and her break as she joined EastEnders as Sam Mitchell in her teens. There was a lot I didn't know in this part and it was the most interesting section of the book for me, especially as my eldest daughter ...
