Clean air?
Advantages: it does work. Disadvantages: replacement filters, breakdowns.

This was not the only reason as both my wife and myself seem to suffer a bit with hay fever. I wanted to get a filter into several rooms of the house.
My wife wanted a unit that had a HEPA filter, I just wanted something that could keep the room air somewhat clean and be easy to use. To this day I am still somewhat unsure what a HEPA filter is and why it is supposed to be good. At the time the houses on each side of us were both undergoing major structural alterations so there was a lot of builders dust in the air around us.
After over a year of using these I think I can now make a report.
Size Dimension: 10.75" D x 5.01" W x 26.5" H. HEPA type filtration efficient at removing airborne particles such as pollen, dander, household dust, smoke, and mold spores. Boxed-product weight: 3.2 Kg Product Weight: 2.39Kg Low energy consumption: 36W. Suitable for room sizes up to 34m2/clean air in rooms up to 180 sq. ft. (12 x 15).
The machine is in a dual colour heavy duty plastic casing.
The machine has three speed settings and a separate ioniser button on the top. The ioniser can be switched separately from the filtration unit. I have no idea if this works separately from the filtration part as I never tried. Speeds are fast, medium and low. This last is for night use. I normally had my machine on medium speed and had the machine in operation for at least 10 hours per day.
This unit has two possible modes of operation. As per the picture with the grill parallel to the floor or rotated through 90 degrees where the machine stands vertically with the grill uppermost. The air is drawn in and expelled at 90 degrees to the intake, either vertically when the grill is parallel to the floor or parallel to floor when machine is vertical. The expelled air does not cause a noticeable draft that you might find uncomfortable unless you wanted to sit yourself right next to the machine. I did not notice any difference in operation when the machine was placed in the different positions, It would appear that this is a matter of choice rather than efficiency.
The sound produced in its operations is rather noticeable. More at the higher settings than the lower settings though it is not too outstanding. You can operate a computer or other audio equipment or watch TV or carry on a phone conversation with out it being too noticeable. You can even sit doing nothing and it is not too distracting.
Changing the HEPA filtration unit is very easy. Unclip the plastic grill from the front. Remove the black plastic mesh filter and slide out the HEPA filter. The new filter can then be slid in, the mesh replaced and grill replaced. All together a very easy operation. As I understand some machines have a light to indicate when a filter needs to be replaced. This will of course depend on the environment where the machine is used.
I would not recommend getting water into the electric parts so I have used a cloth dampened with water and common household detergent to keep the outside of the plastic casing clean. I have used a 1" paint brush to clean the slots in the front and upper grill work. The black plastic mesh can be washed by hand in detergent water and can then be reused when dry.
Does it work? Well I did notice some reduction in the atmosphere contaminants. The air was definitely clearer after I had had a cigarette. I did notice that there did not seem to be any reduction in the amount of dust I seem to generate in my room though.
But I have found some faults in the machine. After a period of use that could be several month’s everyday the power on/off switch fails. This has failed on three of the four machines I bought. This cannot be repaired as you cannot get at it. The company does state that there are no user repairable parts but I wanted to try as each machine failed one after the other.
Perhaps I was just unlucky with mine. Perhaps I over used them by using them every day. If you are going to get such a machine then perhaps a work room is not the best place for this compact unit. A bedroom or lounge where the machine could be used prior to your occupation perhaps.
The other difficulty was in obtaining the replacement HEPA filters. When I bought the machines I did a check for filters as I knew that I would have to replace them. I did not find ANY U.K. supplier. I had to go direct to Canada to get any and had to pay import duties on them. This is a major drawback.
I have noted that Amazon states that these are limited availability or are withdrawn now though they are advertised on Argos at about £50
I paid £49.99 when I bought mine then so the price has remained very stable.
I have not tried any other compact machine so I cannot compare like with like. Overall it did work as advertised if only for a shorter period than I would have liked. From my own experience I would not feel justified in recommending this but perhaps I was just unfortunate with my machines.
Advantages: Nice fresh air, removes all bad things in air. Strong design. Disadvantages: Noise. White colour scheme?
Well I can't remember where I got this air purifier from now I've been using it for a few years now. But this thing is great if air cleaning is what your after in a small space without a huge price this is the one to go for. The filter lasts a long time and removes something like 99.99% of all airborne particles! I've yet to replace mine and I would still say it's got about 5 months left!
HEPA 99.99% Filter + Pre stage Carbon filter which is washable. ... ...can be placed either on it's side length ways or vertically. It doesn't effect the operation and has rubber feet for both options.
It's a very strong unit it's hard to damage really... Powered by two centrifugal motors/fans it's got the power to clean the largest of rooms.
It has three speed settings each shown by a line on the right slider bar. These adjust the noise respectively. I wouldn't suggest this though if your planning to use it for night ...

I've had a few different air purifiers, none of which made me happy. I'm allergic to almost everything from dustmites to air itself it seems sometimes, and spend most of my days sneezing, or at least with a somewhat cloggy nose. Not pleasant. We maintain a strict regimen of keeping our bedroom dust free and freshly aired and I thought purifying the air I breathe at home in addition to all of that would be a sure solution. My husband actually bought ... ...it was around £50.00). He thought the combined effects of the Hepa filter and the Ioniser would solve all my problems, as we'd only ever had purifiers with the Hepa filter alone before. I also had high hopes for it, and on the plus side, it's small enough to keep on my bedside table, and quiet enough that it doesn't irritate me all night by being there. It's not the most stylish appliance in the world, but my nose doesn't care about style anymore. ...

Advantages: Freshens the air, Quiet Disadvantages: Expensive for what it is, Ionizer a bit of a gimmik
I suffer from tonsilitis and the particles in the air seem to affect it quite a bit, so i decided to get an air purifier to see if it helped alleviate the problem.
I looked in Argos and there it was £50! I finally got mine on ebay for around £25.
Basically this air purifier has a HEPA filter and an Ioniser. The air is sucked in through the filter, catching any particles and is blown out the other end over the ioniser, the ioniser supposedly changes ... ...attract more particles making it heavier, then it drops back down an is easier to be caught by the filter. supposedly.
The unit is small enough to keep on a desk or bedside unit but it is still pretty bulky, i keep mine tucked in the corner. There are 3 speed settings for the fan, slow ('silent mode', med and fast) the silent mode is bearable at night but then i am quite a heavy sleeper and have never had any problems with it keeping me awake. Advantages: Remove dust and unpleasant smells from rooms. EXCELLENT. Disadvantages: Filters are difficult to purchase, but not impossible.
I bought the '''Bionaire BAP242 Compact Air Purifier with Ioniser''' in 2005, and I have just bought another which is why I am writing this review.
It's an excellent product, and serves it's purpose brilliantly. After a few hours of use, you can feel the difference in the quality of the air. I find that it works best in a room where the door is closed. There are many reviews which state that the air purifier does not do what it's supposed to do, ...

Advantages: work very well,,air is cleaner,,allergies are less Disadvantages: filters cost too much,,and are hard to find
good machines for helping allergies and for dust particules,, but filters are very hard to get hold of, and are very expensive,,cant get filters from my local shops, they are 2 speed setting,, and is ideal for bedtime as u can put it on low,,so very quiet,, they are good machines and are not clumsy and big,,great for allergies,,dust mites and dander,, also for problems with nose caused with a allergy,, brilliant little machine,,just wish filters ... ...hold of, if this broke i would consider getting another model,, maybe different model,,but bonaire is a good little piece of equipment to have for anyone who has got allergies,,and who are allergic to allergies and also dust mites, ...
