Advantages: Quick and very tasty and no messing about Disadvantages: A little pricy
I realised while I was at work that I had forgotten to take anything out of the freezer for dinner so I decided to pop into the local supermarket on the way home to see what I could find. At the time I saw there were some new Birdseye products in the freezer compartment for cooking in the microwave. These were the new Steam Fresh Fish range. Besides Birdseye foods have always been value for money and good quality.
I picked up a 350g box of pink salmon fillets in a creamy dill sauce at a special half price offer of £1.50. The picture look appetizing, displaying a plate of flaky pink steamed salmon with a creamy looking sauce on a bed of asparagus. ... more
I realised while I was at work that I had forgotten to take anything out of the freezer for dinner so I decided to pop into the local supermarket on the way home to see what I could find. At the time I saw there were some new Birdseye products in the freezer compartment for cooking in the microwave. These were the new Steam Fresh Fish range. Needing something that would cook quickly as I had prepared the veg before going to work, ready to pop on the boil, this sounded ideal and I had already tried their microwaveable Steam Fresh veg which are also very good so I knew I couldn't go far wrong with giving one of these a try. Besides Birdseye foods have always been value for money and good quality.
I picked up a 350g box of pink salmon fillets in a creamy dill sauce at a special half price offer of £1.50. The picture look appetizing, displaying a plate of flaky pink steamed salmon with a creamy looking sauce on a bed of asparagus. so I bought it, in fact I bought 2.
When I got home I read the cooking instructions, which told me to place the Steam Fresh bag on a microwavable plate and to microwave on full power for a 650W oven for three minutes before shaking the bag from side to side and then cooking for a further two and a half minutes. Then to stand for two minutes, shake it gently again, taking care as the bag would be hot and steam would escape once the ends of the bag was cut open the bag to serve.
Seemed simple enough even my husband could manage that without using half the kitchen utensils like he normally does when cooking. So I cooked my veg and whilst straining and serving it up I cooked the fish. Wow wasn't that quick.
Now it comes to the eating. I ought to say first that there are two bags in the box so each bag has to be cooked separately but if left sealed while the other one is cooking the first bag does remain piping hot, and each portion is a decent sized piece not a puny chunk I have found in other brands.
Well, this salmon, is the real macoy. Wild salmon, cooked to a treat and you can really taste the freshness of the fish no earthiness that you can sometime get with fresh salmon, its flaky and tender, skinless and boneless so no messing about searching for tiny bones and no waste. That to me is an ideal fish dish.
The sauce is creamy, not thick and heavy, or watery, sloppy or even lumpy but smooth and almost like double cream so it coats the fish and what ever veg you want to pour it over as there is plenty of it. It's not strongly flavoured with dill but delicate with a slight warming of mustard that highlighted the flavour of the meal. Now I wouldn't normally put mustard with fish but this works very well. What I also liked about it was it wasn't dry but moist when it came out of the bag.
So that is about all I can say of the meal because eating it speaks for itsself but I will say it was very, very tasty and unlike other microwaveable ready meals I have tried, even my husband said "Crikey this has got a nice flavour." I served this fish meal with new potatoes and garden peas. Perfect.
All that is left is to tell you is the energy factors and the ingrediants and I am listing this for a purpose knowing there are those of you who have to watch the ingrediant contents of meals and food products and other factors like sugar and salt values as being a diabetic I have to always check the ingrediants on packages myself.
Ingrediants are Wild Pink Salmon fillet, Dill Sauce made of Water, Butter, Skimmed Milk Powder, Whole Milk Powder, Onion, Maize Starch, and Cream. White Fish Stock containing Yeast Extract, Salt, Tomato Extract, Fish Extract, Sugar, Water, Sunflower Seed Oil, Black Pepper, Garlic Extract. Dill, Mustard Flour which contains Mustard Powder and Wheat Flour. Salt and Natural Emulsifier of Sunflower Lecithin, (what ever that is).
Now for those watching the numbers.

Well thats it, my second food review. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed eating the fish.
Advantages: complete meal for one, microwaveable Disadvantages: fairly large box for freezer storage, not enough of it!
