Bogan, can now be recognized as one of the most important, in any language, of our time. Birds, Beasts and Flowers, his first great experiment in free verse...
Advantages: Gives some sense of closure if you've read The Rainbow Disadvantages: Very dull and polemical
...Warning
After reading the Introduction to D.H. Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover and finding out pretty much the whole plot, I decided not to read the Introduction to Women In Love. It was going to be a long book and I wanted a few surprises left ahead of me.
However, I feel I should warn readers that this review includes a few spoilers as I think it would be rather unhelpful not to refer to any of the events that occur in this very long novel. If you don't want any of these events given away then I would advise not reading much further, but if you want an informed view as to whether this book is worth a read and what I thought of it, then read on…

Advantages: a 'classic', an interesting book to talk about, pretty short Disadvantages: rather tiresome to read
...Warning
Before you read this review I better point out that it may contain spoilers, depending on what you know about the novel already and what you want to get out of it. The introduction to my Wordsworth Classics edition told me pretty much the main gist of the novel and all the main events in the twenty pages or so before I got on to the final text. So if you want surprises left ahead of you then I'd advise reading this review after you've explored the book for yourself, but if, like me, you want an informed opinion as to whether this 'classic' is worth a read at some point or not, then read on…

Advantages: A truly, great novel and good introduction to Lawrence. Disadvantages: The idea of a rigid class system is dated.
...I was first introduced to the works of DHLawrence by my English literature teacher and I have read and re-read many of his novels. But my favourite remains the largely autobiographical “Sons and Lovers”, written in 1913.
Set in the mining village of Bestwood, the novel depicts the life of the Morel family. Gertrude Morel is a high-minded woman, religious, hard working and very moral. She is first attracted to Walter Morel, a coal miner, because of his passionate, earthy nature. Today we might say that Walter is her “bit of rough” but when that initial spark of passion is spent, Mrs Morel realises that she and her husband have nothing in common. She regards him in every way as her inferior and she grows to despise him and the lifestyle he has forced upon her. The further the husband and wife grow apart...
