...meal. I've always liked Birds Eye's meals, and this one is no exception. It's a lovely curry and no doubt I'll be eating lots more of this curry and other Birds Eye foods!
I love Indian food. I love curries, and could live on them. The other day I couldn't be bothered to make myself a curry, so decided to buy a ready meal from the shop.
The one I opted for was 'Birds Eye Chicken Curry with rice'. It looked good enough to eat on the packet, and very appetising. I paid £1.59 for a 44g ready meal. The cardboard packaging it comes in is orange with a big picture of the said curry on the front. It says on the front that - and I quote - a new and improved recipe. What's different with it now from before I don't know.
On opening the packet you will find 2 bags contained therein. One bag contains the curry, the other the rice. On first glance, the curry doesn't look too bad. I was a bid concerned with the rice though as it looked a big too dry, and wondered if it would taste like this.
You can cook the meal in two ways. You can either boil it. You first place the curry only bag into a pan of boiling water. Bring it to the boil and after 15 minutes add the rice bag. Then continue boiling for a further 4 minutes. When you take the bags out of the saucepan, just drain the rice off and serve the curry.
The other way of cooking is in the microwave. To do this make 2 slits in the curry bag. Cook this on full power for 4 mins (650W/B), 3.5 mins (750W/D), 3 mins (850W/E). Place the rice next to the curry, leaving a gap between them. Pour 1 tablespoond of water over the rice bag. Microwave on full power for 5 mins (650W/B), 4.5mins(750W/B), 4 mins(850W/E).
I cooked mine on the cooker in boiling water. But, either way it will be nice. Once served, you can always get a piece of naan bread, or a popodum or something, if you wanted something extra to eat. I had a piece of naan bread.
The smell of the curry is really nice. It doesn't smell too spicy, it smells really pleasant. The look of the curry is tempting too. Now cooked, the rice doesn't look too bad and now looks more edible.
The taste of the curry surprised me a little. I didn't expect it to be as hot as what it was. Although it's not so hot you'll be running to the tap for water. It's just right and the spicy taste leaves your mouth with a very slight burning, but it's not too bad. There is plenty of chicken pieces, and the texture of the chicken is really nice and tender. The rice is light and fluffy too.
Although there's not too much here, I did find it filling, and felt quite full after eating this.
All in all, I really enjoyed this meal. I've always liked Birds Eye's meals, and this one is no exception. It's a lovely curry and no doubt I'll be eating lots more of this curry and other Birds Eye foods!
Advantages: Cheap, Nice chicken Disadvantages: Too mild, too pale, too fruity
...not a great fan of Birds Eye either. I have fond memories of their burgers, frozen peas and fish fingers, but when they began to diversify into the ready meals market some years ago I found their usual high standards distinctly lacking. So it was with great trepidation that I approached their frozen Chicken Curry with Rice last night.
Birds Eye Chicken Curry with Rice comes in a rather small box and costs around £1.30 (mine was bought at a local ... ...find two bags: one containing the curry and one containing the rice.
To cook, you either pop in the microwave or boil both bags in a saucepan of water for 20 mins. I chose this latter option, as I don't trust microwaves for anything except reheating.
Because it's boil in the bag, you don't get much of an aroma floating around the kitchen as it cooks, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing, as it means you've got no lingering smells to deal with ...

Advantages: Quick and easy to cook Disadvantages: Not enough chicken, too many sultanas
I've just finished my Birds eye chicken curry.
This one has been in the the freezer for a few weeks and on the front of the box, was a picture of the actual meal which looks perfect as in any advert or picture. The last time I was in tesco I noticed they had changed the boxes design ever so slightly! The box says it is 375g portion. I'm not sure if you can get bigger ones or smaller ones! It also says that bones may remain in the chicken. I think ... ...Anyway, I bought this Chicken Curry in Tescos who sell them at around £1.28 where as, my local Spar sell them at £1.68! That 40p makes a difference!
Anyway lets get on to the curry itself! The box says that it is 100% chicken breast in a mild curry sauce! The curry sauce contains sultanas which I hate, diced apple which you hardly see or tatse, mango chutney and traditional spices most of which I have never heard off!It comes with long grain patna ...

...curry and that is where Birds Eye Chicken Curry and Rice comes into the equation.
As I said in my previous “Frozen Food” opinion, it is unusual to actually find these frozen foodstuffs that amount to anything but a pile of bland, pretty dire and barely edible meals, but trust Birds Eye to get things right, after all, they are pretty much the champions of frozen foods. This range of curries have been around for many a year and have always ... ...unlike some of it’s competitors, Birds Eye give you nicely sized pieces of the stuff, no little scrawny pieces of horrible looking Chicken, just pure white and nice and tender and the rice is also of a nice quality, it is only basic white long grain rice, but all the same it is very enjoyable.
So Brian, how much does it cost?
Well, as with all these types of products, the price will vary from shop to shop, but it is usually priced at around ...

...June you know) sun shining birds chirping, wind gently caressing my hair, pen poised in one hand, and fork in the other! (This temporary unemployed thing isn’t too bad!)
Okay, so I take awhile to post ....... shoot me?!?!
Ready to dive into what in my opinion (hence the reason for this) is one of the best Curry’s I’ve ever tasted.
This 375g box with the picture of the contents which totally does the curry justice currently retails at approx. £1.29. ... ...with most of the boil in the bag range of foods, they are quick, easy, and, clean to use. Either stick the two bags (one of rice the other with the curry for those of you who are not familiar with the concept!) in a pan of boiling water for around twenty minutes (its ok guys its not actually cooking). Or my preferred method. PING. Yes the good old fashioned microwave. It only takes 8 and a half mins for my” god send “ to turn two very cold blocks ...

...I decided to try the Birds Eye chicken curry with rice. How could I not when it was calling me so sweetly from the Co-Op frozen cabinets and priced so temptingly at 99p?
