5 Stars Walking back to Happiness Review with images 31/07/2005

I struggle to find well fitting, comfortable shoes ever since my hubby stood on my little toe when I was wearing flip flops a couple of years ago. Now the said toe sits at a jaunty angle, quite at odds with the rest of my digits. Judging by the pain I felt at the time and for weeks afterwards I have concluded that he broke it and it's reset itself. He does swear it was an accident to this day but I have my doubts. Anyway, wearing summery sandals displays my tortured toe in all its glory and I've been struggling to find something that is both comfortable, summery and, most importantly keeps my ... more

I can't wait until the summer arrives! Apart from those long sunny days and light evenings I love wearing sandals. However I am not talking about any old sandals, for me sandals equal Birkenstock. Every year I treat myself to a new pair from the ever-growing range offered by the Birkenstock Company. Its not that last years have worn out you understand, just that buying the latest, gorgeous addition is one of my summer vices! Before I tell you why I am hooked on these sandals let me tell you a bit about the company. A potted history. ******************* The Birkenstock name has been associated ... more

    Advantages Advantages comfy

    Disadvantages Disadvantages clumsy

I’ve done something I thought I’d never do, I’ve bought a pair of Birkenstock sandals! Why have I waited for so long? Because they’re ugly and clumsy, why have I bought them after all? Because I needed white sandals, they were the only white ones I could find, they’re not expensive and they’re comfy. Some years ago it wouldn’t have made sense to tell British readers something about this brand, although Birkenstock was first marketed in the UK in 1975, it was not widely known, it was restricted mainly to dyed-in-the-wool greens, hippies and vegans. All this changed in 2002 when Gwyneth Paltrow ... more

Advantages Advantages Durable, comfortable, reasonably priced, always in fashion

Disadvantages Disadvantages Cork sole tends to break with lots of use

I am a big fan of birkenstocks, my fiancee and I both wear them all the time. Between us, we've had the Roma, Ramses, Boston, Boston Microfibre and I am sure a few other pairs. They are rediculously comfortable when you get used to them. I will admit, when you first put them on they can be a bit stiff and even uncomfortable. It take a few weeks until the cork sole starts taking shape of your foot but after you get through that, than you won't be able to take them off. They are especially good for long walks. The craftsmanship of the birkenstock goes back something like 250 years and this is ... more

Advantages Advantages Extremely comfy, last years, good for your feet

Disadvantages Disadvantages Need to regularly apply cork sealant in order to make them last longer

I bought my first pair of Birkenstocks 4 years ago and I am still wearing the very same pair now! They are the 'Madrid' style (one thick strap across the front of your foot). I have just gone and bought myself a new pair, this time the 'Mayari' style, which has two thinner straps and a loop whole for your big toe. .....'Madrid'...... When I bought my first pair of Madrids I wasn't overly enamoured by the look of them. However the feel of them on my feet overrode any concerns my inner fashionable self had with them! I bought them in Costco for about £20 so the price wasn't really a problem ... more
