The BissellProHeat is a truly wonderful device. We moved into a new house, recently. It was a show home and we were assured that it had been cleaned to a "high standard" by the cleaner who had worked for the developers for nearly 20 years. Well, doubtless she'd turned up every day, but I would be surprised to find out if she had done any cleaning throughout the entire 20 years. The carpet, in short, was decidedly grubby after been walked on by all and sundry for the two years that it had served as a show home.
What to do? Hire a carpet cleaner at £60 to £70 per day (plus the deposit) or buy a carpet cleaning system? We decided to go for the latter option and looked around for a carpet cleaning system.
After looking round and seeing what was available, we decided to plump for the Bissell ProHeat II. It cost is £168.00 from the Marshall Ward catalogue, so it was delivered direct to our door.
It comes with an easy-to-read instruction 20 page instruction booklet. This booklet is unique in my recent experience of instruction booklets in that it is easy to understand and use and does not come complete with page after page of multi-lingual instructions that merely cause misery and confusion to the hapless soul trying to understand how to use the equipment! (Individual language instruction booklets such as that which comes with the Bissell ProHeat II are the way forward, in my opinion. A little bit more expensive to produce? No worries! I'll pay the extra, thank you very much!)
Following a friendly welcome form Mark J. Bissell, the president and chief executive officer of Bissell, come some comprehensive safety instructions. The rest of the user guide is filled with commonsense instructions on how to get the best out of your machine and from your carpets, too!
There are a number of features on the machine that prove to be very useful additions. The DirtLifter PowerBrush, for example, does exactly what it says. The instruction booklet says that it is designed specially to lift out "deep down dirt" whilst at the same time "gently grooming carpet fibres." It works! Stretches of fitted carpet that looked very much the worse for wear (the cleaner had hidden them by moving large items of furniture and hiding the dirt!) looked like new.
You fill the machine with water from your hot tap (so that it is not too hot) with the Bissell cleaning liquid and the machine then heats the mixture up to the required temperature.
We found that the machine leaves very little water in the carpets and that they dry very quickly. True, some chemical cleaners leave your carpets perfectly dry, but why risk using potentially harmful chemicals when you can use a safer water-based system such as employed in the Bissell machine?
The ProHeat II also has some other very impressive features. For example, if you have a high traffic area of carpet (hallway, etc.,) the system automatically adjusts the amounts of water and cleaning fluid that is calculated to do the job efficiently. And I have to report that this idea does work very well indeed.
The instruction booklet also contains useful hints and tips. For example it points out ways owners of Berber carpets can reduce the wear caused by vacuuming or carpet cleaning.
The Bissell ProHeat II comes complete with a TurboBrush which is used for cleaning stains and marks on carpets. The machine also comes with special tools for cleaning upholstery and stairs. By using a supplied adaptor bar the ProHeat can clean hard floor surfaces, too.
There are a number of special cleaning fluids available, including a hard floor solution, and a special "Wash and Protect formula which is ideal for homes with pets. The carpet solutions come with added Scotchguard, so can help keep your carpets looking good. Solutions are available from a number of retailers, including Lakeland. You can visit Bissell at www.bissell.com or in the UK you can phone 0870 2250109, 9 to 5 Monday to Thursday or until 4 on Fridays.

We have one of these and it has proved worth it weight in gold. We have even mad a bit of money out of it by hiring it out to people who were moving out of their rented properties and needed the carpets cleaned. Ian

I liked reading some of the features of this machine such as the automatic level for pumping solution into the carpet automatically for high dirt traffic areas. Whilst you have commented on how easy it is to use the machine, I know from experience that its indeed a very slow and laborious task as well as the initial heavy weight of the machine - I considered buying this machine to replace our Vax canister but after using a Bissell Proheat on loan from a friend (we swapped our machines) I found cleaning out the machine was worse than the Vax; the roller brushes for example were gunged up and it took a long time to get everything clean when my pal came back to collect the machine. You could add detail as to what its like to clean the machine after use as well as maximum water capacity in general. Vax machines currently have a maximum of 4 litres in the wet tank, and whilst this is small, at the end of the day I prefer my Vax - I have it always set up in carpet wet mode as I have a normal dry cleaner too. My friend adored the Vax but the Bissell has a water heater whereas the Vax doesnt.
