What did we do before the blackberry? Today we can take for granted the ability to send an e-mail from this small handheld device that fits in your pocket? It’s crazy!
To me the blackberry bold is the first real step blackberry have made to corner the consumer handphone market and is without a doubt the main rival to the iphone. I have been a blackberry user for the past three years, my first being the blackberry pearl, a small but useful handset, the only thing missing was the full QWERTY keyboard which you do really need. After that phone I moved to the T-Mobile MDA 3 which had a nasty stylus to type with and used Windows Mobile, two things I now abhor!
I use the phone for both business and social use. I can get my work e-mails and also keep in touch with my social life on facebook and my own personal e-mails. The blackberry e-mail service is fantastic and routes e-mails through push e-mail, sending them straight to the device the minute they hit your inbox, unlike many other phones which use pull e-mail where the phone manually looks every few minutes or hours to see if anything has come in. The blackberry operates in realtime, essential for a useful device!
This handset is Blackberry’s first foray into the 3G arena and you can really notice the difference. The handset has a useful web browser which is rapid when loading and easily navigated with the rollerball which works like a mouse. Surfing the net is easy and quick but obviously still not as quick as a conventional computer.
The phone has the standard business features of address books, calendars, which can work with MS Outlook and Apple Ical, accepting meeting requests and keeping your schedule updated. There is also inbuilt GPS technology, which allows you to use google maps or add on GPS motoring software to use the phone like a sat nav unit. On many occasions I have used it to navigate the streets of cities when trying to find a restaurant or shop! Definitely a useful facility!
As with all blackberry devices the phone has blackberry messenger. An equivalent program to MSN or Skype allowing you to message other BB users over the network. As more of your friends and colleagues get BB’s you can easily communicate with this method as well as SMS,MMS, E-mail and phone, the opportunities are endless!
The phone also has a 2 mega pixel camera, not the greatest in the marketplace but if you don’t need anything special then it is more than adequate. The camera can take still’s and video and has a flash.
The phone sits snug in your hand and although it is thin, you must bear in mind this is a smaprtphone and by no means small. Size is somewhat sacrificed for the features of the phone and it’s functionality.
Blackberry is becoming more and more popular and there are a lot of applications that you can now add to the handsets such as facebook, msn, twitter etc similarly to the iphone.
In summary the phone to my needs is fantastic. It does what I ask of it and is extremely reliable. If you want a reliable handset for e-mail then definitely look at the bold. It will look after you for sure!
My handset is on Orange and uses their blackberry service at a cost of £2.50 a month which includes unlimited internet and e-mail functionality. Service wise, it has never let me down.
