For a while I was given this phone by work as there were going to be times when I really would have to be at the other end of the phone. When I opened the Blackberry Curve 8530 my heart sank as it looked far too complicated for me.
I had been used to having a phone that made calls, sent texts and let me take photographs that I struggled to download, but that was it. Suddenly I could e mail, get onto the internet and the picture quality was much better.
I did get a bit of help setting it up especially the e mail, but this was needed as it was the company system that was being used and they needed to know it was done properly.
Even though it was set up for me I did not use it to the best of its ability and I regret that I did not make more use of it while I had it. It was a lightweight phone weighing just 106g and with the case to protect it, there was little or no damage apart from a slight scratch on the screen. It fits into most of my bags and measures 109 x 60 x 13.9 mm.
I was a bit worried about the keys as I have quite big hands but it was not a problem. There were a lot less spelling mistakes when I used this then for texts with my own phone.
The games are fun and a bit addictive so I have more time to myself now. The two I played the most were the brick breaker and the word game - I think it was called word mole, but it is now over a year since I used this so my memory may be wrong.
The battery was good as it lasted for a week without needing to be charged but I was still surprised to find that it was supposed to have a 252 standby battery life – I don’t think it ever manage to last that long. The talk time was 4 hours.
There are a number of ways to be alerted to a call or message as the settings are vibration, polyphonic (32) or MP3 ringtones – adding my own ringtone was easy. It has a loudspeaker facility and that was very clear on the few times I used it. It also helpful that when you had new mesasges there was a little red star on the message icon.
The icons were well arranged and did not take up a lot of room on the screen meaning that it was easy to se whatever picture you had saved there.
If you want a top of the range phone then this is probably not the one for you and as it is a few years old, there will be a lot of new capabilities on the later models but it certainly was ideal for me.
I have given it 5 stars as it did everything I needed it to do.
