Manufacturer's product description
The BLACK BOX CAT5 Multi VGA System with Audio provides maximum flexibility so you can easily broadcast VGA video plus audio to wherever you need it. It's perfect for on-site advertising or informational applications or use it for virtual signage in public areas such as stores, schools, casinos, and restaurants. The system uses ordinary CAT5 cable. CAT5 is inexpensive, lightweight, and easy to handle, and chances are you already have it installed on your premises. CAT5 is even suitable for areas such as airplanes and ships, where a compact, lightweight cable is preferred. Unlike other systems, you're not limited to choosing either a hub or a daisychain topology. The CAT5 Multi VGA System provides maximum cabling flexibility by enabling you to mix and match hub and daisychain topologies. Module combinations are almost infinite - you can link hubs together; you can even link a hub to a dual-port module to another hub. This is truly a system that adapts to fit your application! Broadcast video plus line-level mono audio from your computer to as many as 100 computer monitors up to 450 feet (137.2 m) away. Both VGA and audio signals travel over a single CAT5 cable. The CAT5 Multi VGA System broadcasts mono rather than stereo sounds. In public spaces where you can't be sure where your audience is in relation to the speakers, monaural audio provides more consistent sound quality than stereo. The CAT5 Multi VGA System is literally plug-and-play. It goes together with easy-to-handle, inexpensive CAT5 cable. Need to connect more than one computer? Use quad transmitters and dual receivers to build any combination of hub and daisychain topologies that works for you. Send the audio portion of the signal to either embedded or separate, powered speakers. The CAT5 Multi VGA System requires no software and is operating system independent.
Advantages: easy, quick, all the basic bits are supplied Disadvantages: Hub is only 10mbit, driver issues
...This starter kit is ideal if you want an easy and cheap way of setting up a small network in your home or office.
Why would you want a network?

You wont if you only have a computer! By joining computers together, it makes is so much easier so you dont have to put things onto floppy disk or CD and manually carry it over to the other computer. This is a brilliant time saver and theres a limit to what you can put on a disk if its a big file. You can share files, printers, scanners, and hard drives among the computers and this saves time and money as you will only need one printer and scanner etc.

Advantages: Small and sleek Disadvantages: Possibly too small for a small office
...to the internet through a router.
A hub is a perfect way to set up a home network. The Netgear DS104 has four RJ-45 ports. These can be used to network four computers together or network three together and use the last port as a link to another hub. The reason why a hub is required in a network is because a standard CAT5 cable will certainly link two computers together but it will be just like connecting the positives of two batteries together. The hub is therefore required to communicate the data successfully. It's not likely that you'll daisy-chain ports together in a home network but four ports is just the right amount for a family.
This hub can connect at speeds of both 10 and 100Mbit/s. This means there is a theoretical maximum of 1.25 and 12.5MB/s although on a 100 base system the average speed is about 3MB/s.
The hub comes with a power...

Advantages: Simple, effective, great value Disadvantages: none
..., ME, 98 and Mac OS 9) the system works faultlessly. Broadband internet access is shared on demand amongst the access machines. Even with all 4 machines accessing I still receive over the expected data speed ( i.e. 150kbps /4 ) which is nice.

You get; the 4-port connection router [that has a WAN port to connect your modem and 4 ethernet ports to connect your computers. It also has another 'uplink' port to connect further ethernet hubs/switchs that I have not used], setup CD, quick-start 'poster style' guide, technical support contact details and a 1m length of Cat5 ethernet cable.
To conclude: this router is of excellent quality and value and does exactly what it says on the box with minimal fuss and with simple setup instructions. It was easy to get going even with my lack of networking experience.
Dave
P.S. Any of you...

I first heard Black Box in 1989 as a ten year old girl when they released their classic 'Ride on Time'. I bought that single, and another one they released called 'Fantasy' in 1990. They were the only two songs from Black Box that I'd heard of, until... more
