Full review
Since the inception of mobile telephony, I have had every new mobile device going, and have often quickly bored of them. Thanks to eBay, I can continually sate my thirst for gadgetry.

I was recently paying an horrendous amount of cash to my mobile phone service provider in data charges for email and web browsing on my mobile. Thus, I decided to get a Blackberry device, for email and web ONLY.

I signed up with O2 for a Data Only tariff, at about £15 a month ex VAT. Aside from an initial confusion re: my new SIM card, the account was activated and my Blackberry 7290 burst into life!

Setting it up was easier than breathing - simply log in to O2s special website, provide some details about your device (in particular the unique identifying number) and detail which email accounts/addresses you want the Blackberry to retrieve mail from - for instance I have a btinternet.com and an aol.com account - my device recieves emails from both accounts. You an specify which account the device 'appears' to be sending mails from as well - this means that when I send mails from my device, the recipient sees my *****@btinternet.com address.

Once this is set up, the O2 Blackberry server 'pushes' your emails to the device every 15 mins (not constantly on, but good enough!)

Having been possessed of many many PDAs in the past (Palm, Psion, PPC etc) I was very sceptical about using this device as a PDA as it had no touch screen. Everything is controlled by a scroll wheel on the side of the device which you use to highlight and push to click. Relevant menus appear when it is clicked in, and it is unbearably seek and simple to use. Under the scroll wheel is an 'escape' or 'back' button. Essentially, you can use the device one-handed.

The PDA functions are excellent - as good as any on a Palm. Tasks, Phone book (all synching with Outlook on your PC), Memos are all there.

The QWERTY keyboard is excellent. Buttons are a good size, and typing by thumb becomes second nature in minutes! The keys depress with a satisfying robustness, and it is very difficult to slip from one key to another, thus making spelling errors. Some of the newer 71xx series Blackberrys on O2, TMob and Vdafone have a strange keypad which uses a semi T9 predictive test system, which has caused problems for users - a QWERTY is the way to go. Contrary to belief, this does not cause any undue weight, width or bulk on the device, and I am quite happy carrying this and a Nokia 7230 (for voice calls) on my belt, with NO problems.

The device can be used as a phone (although I do not - data only, remember!) and the bundled O2 web browser does as good a job as any PDA over O2s GPRS connection.

I was also pleased to see that the device will easily view jpeg and doc attachments on emails. You can save relevant emails and/or attachments in specially designated folders.

The screen is unexpectedly gorgeous. Colours and icons are superb and there are two backlight settings.

Battery is outstanding - I charged my device 4 days ago - its still on 4 bars (out of 5) for battery, but remember I'm not using mine for voice calls.

The 7290 is Bluetooth enabled, although I suspect this is for headsets only, as I cannot get it to connect to my PC for file (i.e. pictures) exchange.......?

In summary, there is no camera, no huge memory, no MP3 player, no stylus or touchscreen, nothing fancy at all. But, this device has got its magic under the hood - it simply removes the headache of setting up multiple POP and IMAP mail accounts on some fiddly mobile phone or PDA, which as far as I am concerned, is worth the price alone! I can be on the bus and respond instantly to emails, especially when I have got some of my discarded gadgets for sale on eBay! The added wonderment of the ridiculously simple scrollwheel driven menu, and the ease of typing appointments or contacts make this (and believe me, I am very hard to please!) the BEST gadget I have ever owned!

The Blackberry 7290 is available on DATA ONLY (ie email and web, 5Mb per month I think) on TMobile and O2, and costs about £200 with contract.

Advantages: email on the go, calender, address book, good battery, easy to use, good visible display
Disadvantages: cost

I love getting my hands on new gadgets and when I had the opportunity to take possesion of a Blackberry 7290 for only £99.99 on an 18 month contract with Vodafone I jumped at the chance. Included within the box was the Blackberry itself, the software disk, a plug socket charger and a USB cable for transferring data to the desktop PC. The cable also doubles up as a charger for the battery which needs charging for about 12 hours before using it the ...
...the instructions as I found installing the software a bit of a nightmare at first and ended up on the phone to technical support twice. Each time they were very helpful and eventually a small icon appeared that shows the progress of data transfers and updates. So what is on the Blackberry that makes it special? Well, it's just like carrying your PC around with you. It can both send and receive emails using GPRS technology, can be used to make phone ... Read review
