So bear with me as this is my first stab at writing a technology review but I received a new Blackberry for work a few weeks ago and I'm really pleased with it so I though I would write a review on it.
The model in question is the Blackberry Curve 8310 Smartphone. I got mine free but with price plans available with the different service providers it can be anywhere up to £200 I believe.
The first thing I noticed about the phone (which is what made me choose it and as you can probably tell that I'm not very technologically minded!) is that it looks good. The phone has a lovely metallic finish, almost like a gunmetal grey colour to it although it does come in a pink version too (I wasn't allowed this for work unfortunately!) It has really nice rounded edges too and in my opinion is quite sleek. It's very light weight too, just like a regular phone and apparently is the smallest and lightest Blackberry ever to come with a full Qwerty keyboard.
The fact that it has a qwerty keyboard also attracted me. My husband has the blackberry pearl which just has the numbers keyboard and I don't like the fact that you have to always look for the keys and see which number they are on. With this phone it's a mini keyboard which makes writing e-mails quick and efficient, a very handy tool for work as I often need to respond to people in a flash when I am out of the office. Although the keys are small and you do have to pay attention when typing that you don't hit two buttons at once it is a great feature. This phone also has a bigger screen than the Pearl or other Blackberry's so it makes viewing e-mails that come in easier and in my opinion a bit clearer. The screens measures approximately 2 inches by 1 ¾ inches. This phone has the trackball in the centre which acts as the mouse and helps you to navigate around the keyboard.
The phone itself came with a travel charger which has plug adapts for all the different plug regions around the world. These are interchangeable on the charger which means you only have to take one part away with you when you travel for business which is very handy. It also came with a USB cable so if you have a USB port on your computer you can plug it in there and it will charge up. There is a book included too that helps you out and shows you how to use the various functions of your phone. It also came with a leather case to
I found the phone itself very easy to navigate and use but then in this day and age as we are all used to phones and the way they work a new one is never that hard to learn.
The home screen has picture icons (such as text messages, phone book, memo pad and so on) showing you how to get to each section and when you scroll the trackball over them it tells you what each one is. The home screen also displays the date and the time, a signal strength display and also shows you when you have new e-mails, missed phone calls and text messages.
This phone includes the basic features such as messages, phone calls, etc but also includes voice-dialling, media player, access to the web and a built in GPS. I've found the GPS to be very handy and quite detailed and is of a very good quality.
The phone locks automatically if you leave it for a while or there is a button you can press immediately if you want to lock the phone. The first time you ever switch on your phone it prompts you to add a password which will then be used to unlock your phone.
The phone also has a built in camera and the pictures come out just as good if you used a real camera. Also, if you ever get bored on the train on the way home (like I do) there is a game on the phone, Brickbreaker where you have to control a little ball that bumps into little bricks and breaks them, very very addictive.
All in all this is definitely a phone I would recommend and a great addition to the Blackberry family. The battery lasts quite a long time, at least 3 days of being all the whole time and it charges in about 20 minutes.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Advantages: QWERTY keyboard, e-mail, internet Disadvantages: size, because it is larger than the mini phones you see around, however it is still very sexy
Advantages: easy for text ,great storage, good web browser Disadvantages: battery becomes useless, no video recorder, difficult to use until familar with phone
