Recently I discovered that the tyres of me VW Golf 1.8 were badly worn and that replacement was urgently needed.
According to the manual, I required four 195/65/15. Continental, it appears, is the recommended choice of Volkswagen. However, I was need of new tyres and didn’t really bother what brand.
I had a look around my local town and came back with three quotes, ranging from Kwick-Fit to my local tyre dealer. Kwick-Fit came out most expensive, a staggering £85.67 per tyre (Continental Premium Contact 2) and Euromaster recommended me a Michelin Energy E3A for an equally heavy £88.45. My local tyre dealer offered me two sets of tyres, 2 x Good Year and 2 x Continental for £350 fully fitted all together.
They all seemed far too expensive for me. I just wanted a reliable set of tyres.
So I turned to the Internet and made a simple query with the keyword “tyres”. A website named Blackcircles.com came out first. I clicked the link and was surprised to find a website, which was structured in a simple manner and easy to navigate. One is provided with drop-down boxes to select the appropriate sizes and speed indices. The introduction also reads a personal introductory letter by the apparent founder of the business, a chap named Mike Welsh. It says that “Blackcircles.com is the UK's leading INDEPENDENT online tyre retailer”. Bear that in mind for later.
One the following pages I was given a selection a selection of “Budget”, “Mid-Range” and “Premium” tyres. The tyres I was recommended by the local tyre dealers were all in the “Premium” section.
However, as I said, I just wanted a set of decent tyres. So I decided to call Blackcircles up to get some advice on which tyres would suit me best. A pleasant female voice answered the phone and told me that Continental and Michelin tend to have a better mileage, are more robust and worth their money. I then asked about the other brands featured, such as Fateo and Nexen. She said she would recommend me buying Continental and Michelin for the reasons named. I asked again what was wrong with the budget tyres. She said the tyres were of inferior quality and generally not a good buy. We discussed forth and back, but she sticked to her recommendation. I couldn’t believe it. What was wrong with the other tyres? After some time, she revealed to me that she was on a commission scheme, where she tries to sell the customers the brands with the highest margin. The agents are given extra £££ to talk customers into buying tyres which may not fit into their budget. I was badly disappointed. All I wanted was good advice on how to get a set of decent tyres for a limited budget. Therefore not: Blackcircles.com is by no means independent. They will try to sell you whatever makes them most £££. Probably the agents get the commission straight from the tyre manufacturers, who want to push their brands.
I decided to not to buy from Blackcircles and went to my local garage instead. There I got friendly non-bias advice with pros and cons on a range of tyres helping me to buy the tyres I wanted - for just 180 pounds including the fitting. I now drive a set of Barum tyres, which are essentially Continental tyres, just with a different name and price tag.
Advantages: Very easy to use, very good prices, very straightforward. Disadvantages: None for me.
I passed my driving test at the grand old age of 24, bought my first car, and thought I was all set for the world of motoring. Everyone tells you that having a car is expensive, but you don't quite believe them until it happens!
So, amongst other things, it was recommended to me that I needed a set of new tyres on the back of my car.
I decided to shop around on the net, being an avid internet shopper, convinced that I could find a good deal. I ... ...National Tyres but then I found BlackCircles.com.
The site looked of good quality, which I always find reassuring and was very straightforward to use. Having already checked the number on the side of my tyres, I knew which ones I wanted - so I popped them into the relevant boxes, clicked 'Proceed to Step 2". This takes you to a page of options - 'Fully Fitted' or 'Mail Order'. Being a girl, and having no intention of fitting these bad boys myself, ...

Advantages: Competitive, all-inclusive prices Disadvantages: Not always the cheapest
If i ever need a tyre replaced this is one of the very first places I look.
Their prices are very competitive and their customer service is fantastic.
The website is easy to use. It has lots of helpful information to assist you in selecting the correct tyre for your vehicle. When you search for tyres, you will normally be presented with the options for Mid-Range or Premium tyres. Usually by clicking on the tyre type, you get a further review of ... ...'all-in' which is also more helpful than what you often get quoted when contacting garages (whereby you often need to add VAT, disposal, balancing, valve etc). On the occasions when I've had further queries the telephone support to their website has been exemplary and the customer service agents are only too happy to help. Once you select your tyres you provide a postcode of where you want the tyres to be fitted and the webiste then provides the ...

Advantages: Quote all in costs up front, local fitting Disadvantages: Prices vary depending on sizes
I have been meaning to rewrite this review for a long time, now I have the time spare to do it. This company is the first independent I have found who will sell you tyres via the internet. By independent I mean somewhere other than ATS, Kwik Fit etc, you get the picture.
When you first open the site you are faced with a very user friendly home page, the theme is tyre related and is mainly black with helpful links top & bottom. I'd recommend anyone ... ...on the customer comments link. I agree with what they say.
Slap bang in the middle of the page is the area where you input the size of the tyres you require, if you don't know what size you need then you have a few options, take a look at the current tyres on the car and look for the size which will be in the format of xxx/xx/xx x, in the case of my Corsa its 185/55/15 h. The first 2 figures refer to width & profile, as an example my tyre size above ...

Advantages: Independent Disadvantages: Various, but we listen to our customers and make change happen
My name is Michael Welch, I am MD and Founder of Blackcircles.com. I am writing this review in response to the 'not too independent' review posted recently.
I can guarantee all customers and non-customers that we are in fact very independent. Furthermore I can also confirm WE DO NOT incentivise our sales staff on certain products, I should know, I sign off the salaries. Our business has been created to do away with 'favoured' brands unlike the high ... ...complete range catering for all customers based on their preference. I can only assume this post is an attempt to tarnish the good name we are working hard to create - however if not, please email me directly at mikew@blackcircles.com, and I can look into all the claims made in the post in more detail. ...

Advantages: V shaped tread means excellent road handling in the wet. Good grip, well made tyres Disadvantages: pricey
I recently got some new wheels. Some very expensive wheels as it goes. Probably spent far too much money on them, but they are lovely. I?ve always lived by the philosophy that if you are going to do something, you should always do it right. In this case there is no point in putting cheap rubbish tyres on a good set of wheels. It ruins the look but the handling too. I read a review of the Toyo?s on a tyre website (www.blackcircles.com) that gave rave reviews, I had also heard good things from friends and fellow petrol heads. So I thought I would give them a try. I was already running Pirelli P Zero tyres on my old wheels and I didn?t truly think you could get much better. After all, Pirelli are well known and a very good brand. I was wrong. The Toyo?s are far superior. You might notice from the pictures on this sight that the tyre tread ...
