I initially decided to buy a speed camera warning system, and having weighed up the options decided on the Road Angel, but then thought that while I was buying that, I might as well get one that combined a sat-nav system too.
The speed camera warning function on this unit is extremely accurate (down to a couple of feet in some cases, but never more more than a few metres/yards). For regular speed cameras you are warned verbally about 500 yards before getting to the camera and a warning also appears on the screen showing your actual speed along with the speed limit, and then a beeping warning sounds, getting faster and faster as you approach. It thens stops as you drive past. For the newer types of speed trap which are made up of multiple cameras which calculate your average speed over a stretch of road, a warning is given on approaching the first camera which continues until you pass the final one. The camera database inside the unit can be updated via the internet using a supplied USB connection. 6 months of updates are included in the price, and thereafter you have to pay a subscription.
The sat-nav capabilities are also highly impressive, taking you effortlessly right to the door of your destination. Warnings of upcoming turnings are given at 2 miles, 1 mile, 500 yards and 100 yards, although if you don't want all of these you can turn any of them off. Destinations can be entered in a variety of ways, but by far the easiest and quickest is by post code. If you have to enter a real address this can be fairly slow to type on the touch screen.
If you're looking for a sat-nav system primarily and the speed camera warnings are not so important, then the Road Angel is a lot more expensive than others on the market, and you should probably go for a TomTom; but if your primary, or equal, corncern is for speed camera warnings, but fancy sat-nav at the same time, then the Road Angel Navigator is the one to go for.
