So the big chill sets in and my lips dry out. That is basically the deal my body seems to have with Mother Nature. After finally getting through my tube of Carmex which is my number one choice of lip care, I was in a dilemma. Either sit at work all day licking my lips until they were red raw or popping to the corner shop and see if they has any emergency supplies in there! I couldn't bare it anymore and I chose the second option. Corner shop here I come. They had hardly any beauty or health supplies, just the usual bread and milk. But behind the counter, where they keep the odd packet of painkillers and the like, I saw a glimmer of hope. I was actually surprised that they had a few packets of Blistex behind their counter. So I asked for one at the rather expensive price of £3.00 (I know it is cheaper in other places but this was an emergency!) and now, here I am writing this!
** Blistex **
Blistex is an American company which started in 1947 as a small family run business. They have grown and grown and they specialise in all kinds of lip care. Blistex is now sold in over 75 countries! That's a lot of lips!
**What is the Blistex Daily Conditioner SPF15 ? **
It is packaged in
a simple yet charming little white tub with the pink/red Blistex logo. This is displays nicely in a little cardboard stand, although really the cardboard is useless as it serves no purpose other then to make it easier to store in the shop. The Conditioner itself is in a solid form. Similar to soft wax and it has a very deep distinct smell of honey and a hint of vanilla. Very sweet and a pleasant aroma. Blistex describe this lip care as a conditioner for everyday use. No matter what climate or activity, apply it frequently to help prevent and replenish moisture-starved cells for healthy, soft lips in all conditions. So by how it sounds, it works a bit like body lotion for the lips.
** So what is it like to use? **
The first thing I should say is that the pot it quite small so if you have nails, or if your fingers are on the larger side it is a little difficult to get any out! Anyway, once you do manage to get a bit out it smoothes on to the lips really well, and you don't need too much as it is quite thick. It instantly soothes because your lips feel moisturised and nourished. It felt great when I first applied it as my lips were dry and sore. It felt like I had an instant seal over my lips. After a few minutes I had a soft tingling sensation which lasted for a good while. It was very cooling and refreshing. I was quite surprised as it the packaging doesn't suggest it heals lips or anything along those lines, just that's it conditions. After a few days of using it 4-5 times a day I found that my lips were softer but as for replenishing the moisture it seemed to have the reverse effect. Although the roughness on my lips had gone which made them look better, they still felt dry. I think this is fine as a daily conditioner, but there are plenty of better lip balms out there that work better and have an easier application. When the conditioner was on it wasn't noticeable, in other words it has no colour and no shine and sinks in pretty quickly. Depending on your preference this can be a good thing. However, I like a little gloss and a little glisten. Nothing bright and florescent but just something that adds a little hint of a tint. Although this has no spark to it, it is a great base to apply lipstick or a thick lip gloss too. It evens out the lips and makes them look more kissable! One little bonus to this Blistex conditioner is that it does have a Sun Protection Factor of 15. In other words, your lips get 15 times more protection from the sun then if you wasn't wearing the conditioner. Although you might not be able to see the protection it will stop your lips from burning and also protect the soft layers of the lips. In my opinion this is the main benefit from this conditioner. So a thumbs up for that one!
Although this did a great job short term and gave me the instant relief from the cold weather on my lips, in terms of day to day use I wouldn't really recommend it. It is nothing special and didn't live up to its promise of extra moisture. However, I wouldn't completely rule out the Blistex guy's altogether as they do a huge range of lip care products. If you are not in as much of a rush as I was when I purchased mine then you will probably find one that suits what you're looking for. The range includes relief creams to lips splashes of colour and gloss. (Probably more my type of product!) If you want more information on the products available and some extra lip care advice the Blistex website is http://www.blistex.co.uk/BlistexMain.aspx
'''1 Star for the indulgent fragrance 1 Star for the immediate tingling relief 1 Star for the sun protection A bit disappointing but far from completely useless.'''
