The Idiot's Guide to Blu-ray

Advantages: Marked improvement on sound and picture quality, easy to set up, easy to use
Disadvantages: Only plays Region B Blu-ray and Region 2 DVD, no HDMI lead included in the box

...myself in 2009 was the Samsung BD-P1580 Blu-ray player and what follows is the idiot's review of it...the idiot being me! What is Blu-ray? Put simply, a Blu-ray disc has far more storage space than a regular DVD, meaning there is little or no need for compression or compromise on picture and sound quality. As a result the quality levels are quite obviously improved upon that experienced on a regular DVD. Blu-ray however will only work fully if ...
...research I realised that the Samsung BD-P1580 should connect quite easily using a traditional composite audio cable. I also liked the look of this player - it is black and has a sleek appearance. Of course aesthetics aren't all - there are other functions Blu-ray offers which drew me to this player and one of them is Blu-ray Live. This enables you to connect your Blu-ray player to the internet via an Ethernet cable for regular firmware updates. If ...

Unbeatable, given the price.

Advantages: Superb Blu-ray player at a bargain price.
Disadvantages: DVD upscaling not the best around, but it is acceptable.

...the best I’ve seen. Sony do not provide an HDMI cable in the box, but, as anyone wanting to get the best out of the machine would upgrade from the supplied freebie anyway, this isn’t a real problem. Any niggles regarding the lack of an HDMI cable and the average DVD upscaling have to be put into context with the purchase price. At £80.00, this was an absolute bargain, and performance is certainly much better than its budget price suggests, performing ...

Top notch Blu-ray

Advantages: High quality picture and sound, good price
Disadvantages: Loading times

...The remote is like most Panasonic remotes if you have seen one. Easy to use with decent sized buttons. You can use that remote for your Panasonic tv if you have one and your tv remote for the player using the Viera link. The DVD up-scaling I have found very impressive. Even on older DVD's I have seen no loss at all and a crisper picture, especially with text. Its not Blu-ray quality obviously but good none the less. I have not used the BD Live function ...
...by connecting to the internet. It is not Wi-fi only Ethernet but you would pay quite a bit more for Wi-fi. Also by connecting to the internet you can connect and view videos from Youtube. I again have not tried this. The player has USB and SD card slots to view picture etc on. It plays MP3, Divx, CD, DVD AVCHD, pretty much anything. Another note so you are aware, it does not come with an HDMI cable but I got one for £5.99. Overall I would not hesitate ...

Reliable and well priced 2.0 Blu-Ray Player.

Advantages: 2.0 compatible, good looking, easy to use remote, good connectivity for price, excellent price.
Disadvantages: No optical sound output, no HDMI or ethernet cables included, need memory stick for 2.0

...is the cheapest of the Philips range of Blu-Ray players, but it is also BDP 2.0, so you access the latest special features via the internet (as well as update the firmware) through an ethernet cable (remember to buy one). Be aware that you do need to put at least a 1GB memory stick in the back to access these features, as unlike more expensive models it does not have any memory built in. However, if you are like me and are more concerned with the ...
...and are older models, whereas Philips released theirs in May 2009. Whichever Blu-Ray player you do decide to buy, remember to opt for 1.1 or 2.0 and is able to receive firmware updates to ensure it will continue to play blu-ray discs in the coming years. Overall, I am very happy with this player, which looks nice, works well and packs a lot of connectivity considering the price and the competition. An underrated competitor that is really worth considering. ...

...staunch support by Sony and Panasonic amongst others, and boasted about the later updates to its technology available via internet linking, which it claimed would help it stay ahead of the pack in the future. ...time. The Panasonic DMP-BD 80 EG is a little piece of magic --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Panasonic are thought of by many as the kings of Blu-Ray manufacturers. They produce high-quality, admittedly not always cheap Blu-Ray players with an emphasis on great picture and sound quality. The 80 EG keeps with this tradition admirably. It's been out now for some months but is still one of the newer players ...
