Bob Marley - King of Reggae?

Advantages: A great Ras
Disadvantages: Overshadowed his Contemporaries

...some very loud bass, that Bob Marley was the King of Reggae.

I paused for an instant before replying because this was a statement I had heard many, many times before. It occurred to me that this statement might not, necessarily, be correct. If it was correct, then it could only be in the sense that Elvis Presley was King of Rock ‘n' Roll. Elvis certainly had the greatest voice of all time but his main achievement was to set the stage ...
...publicity and Island Records launched Bob in a similar manner.

At this point we are in need of some historical background. Unlike Elvis, Bob had been in commercial music for some ten years when, in 1972, Chris Blackwell signed him and the rest of The Wailers for Island. The band had recorded for many studios right through the Ska, Rock Steady and Reggae eras but had a reputation for being, quite simply, loose cannons and thugs.

reggae music

Advantages: he who helped
Disadvantages: the good die young

Bob Marley was and still is the best reggae singer of all time. In the beginning when Bob first started out making music, he was known as a rude boy (in other words the higher classed people in Jamaica didn't want to know) Here they had a rasta man who they saw as a bad influence on their children. Rastas were frowned upon. Radio stations were not well pleased to play Bobs music, but, how shall I say it, they didn't have an option and they did ...
...popular it became and when Bob was recognised in the United kingdom, even the higher classed jamaicans accepted it. Now Bobs music itself can be so relaxing, if you've got the Exodus cassette tape you'll hear songs like "Turn your lights down low" which really relax you, as he says in the song "turn your lights down low and a draw your window curtains" immediatly you think to yourself yeah i'll do that and relax. But having said that there are ...

Bob Marley the greatest reggae artist

Advantages: Music that makes you feel happy
Disadvantages: none

"Music goes on forever" were Bob Marley's words on the sleeve of his album Legend. I agree with him especially Bob's music. I have always loved listening to Bob Marley & The Wailers for 20 odd years but is only in the past few years that I have realised that his music makes me feel good even when I am feeling low.I have two favourite albums and obviously favourite tracks on each. Although I never skip any of the tracks as they all have meaning and ...

His catchy lyrics, melodys and bass lines makes his songs great to sing along to and really get in to. Gregory Isaacs: Forgotten Reggae Star

Advantages: Great Voice and Persona
Disadvantages: Rarely heard now in Mainstream

It's rather unfortunate that Bob Marley was taken on by Island Records as I'm sure that history would have consigned Bob and the Wailers to the voluminous dustbin of Jamaican music had it been otherwise. As it is, many great reggae singers have missed their chance and drifted into obscurity, overshadowed by Chris Blackwell's creation, Bob Marley. One Jamaican artist that has all but 'disappeared' is Gregory Isaacs, 'The Cool Ruler', a man who refused to bow to the major labels and started his own studio at The African Museum Shop in Kingston. Isaacs cut his first record at a Kingston studio in the late1960s aged around 18. This singer, with his rich, crooning voice was to make a big name for himself in Jamaica, the UK and even the US when the heavy Rockers Reggae gave way to the more sensual Lovers Rock towards the end of the 1970 ...
