This is one of the better Richard Laymon books, although not the best. The story is about a magic bracelet which enables the wearer to step inside other people, to see through their eyes and experience their feelings - thus the name - Body Rides. The idea is brilliant and the result is a well written exciting book. Some of the characters are quite twisted and this provided quite a few unexpected laughs. The plot progresses nicely and over all this is an enjoyable book. It is well worth a read, especially if you are a fan of Richard Laymon's work.
Advantages: Entertaining and original Disadvantages: A bit hard to swallow
Body Rides is a good solid novel, and if you can suspend your disbelief, then you should enjoy it, but it's not one of Laymon's best. The central idea of the novel is a magical ring that allows the wearer to enter the mind of anyone else and not only hear their thoughts, but also see through their eyes and experience their senses. This is all fine, but my one gripe about the novel is that the main character never does any of the things that you or ... ...use it to find out what the President's thinking, or to see what celebrites get up to, or even to spy on all his friends. No, he uses it to try and catch a murderer. Maybe I'm being pedantic, but it just made the novel a bit hard to swallow for me. That said, it is still a good book, particularly if you can suspend your disbelief. ...

Review of Body Rides - Richard Laymon
Advantages: Maxamin entertainment! Good twist at the end. Disadvantages: um...can't really think of any
This was the first of Richard Layman's books I read and by far my favorite! The idea of being able to travel into other people's body's and feel their feelings, hear their thoughts is just amazing. I have often wanted a braclett like that, so I could find out the inner workings of my enemy's minds. The book....From start to finish you never want to put it down! I often missed me stop on the bus with this one. You really get to like the characters ... ...friend's with Neil, and wait tables with Sue. So I guess u want the story line? - Neil is a writer who lives in LA, having writer's block he decides to take back the two rented videos he earlier watched with his girlfriend (who's name escapes me), it's about midnight and not that good an idea to b out in LA that late, but he has nothin else to do, and to save himself a $6 fine for taking them back late. On the way back he hears a scream so he pulls ...

a different demographic too. Some of the scenes of violence and sexual abuse were depicted in a bit too much detail and I had to rush through those pages so as resist the urge to vomit!
If you feel I've given too much of the plot away, think again - there are so many plot twists that the little I've told you doesn't even begin to go near spoiling the story!
Overall I'd rate Come Out Tonight as 4½ out of 10. I'm so glad I didn't pay more than 20 pence for this book! Read it at your peril?

Stephen King's claim to fame ; Superb atmosphere ; Sublime plot ; A vivid imagination that stretches all supernatural boundaries ; Probably responsible for some of the best horror films of the 70's and 80's
Some unessesary background in the first half ; Kubrik mucked up the story too much ; Could have been much more (*)
