American tale of love and politics which you can't put down

Advantages: Compelling story, great characters, lots of period detail
Disadvantages: Life is what happens - and it's not always good

I've been a fan of Anita Shreve for quite a while but have only just got round to reading Sea Glass, first published in 2002. I think it's probably the best one I have read so far. Shreve has gained a name - and earned a fortune - for her often harrowing novels set in New England . They rarely end happily in the way most popular fiction does. But that's because they are firmly rooted in life's awful realities: Sexual betrayal, physical violence,, and in this case the part sheer bad luck and chance can play in how a person's life progresses. Shreve's more recent books have been set in the recent past. This one harks back to the Wall Street Crash of 1929 ( bit like the current one only far worse) and how it affects a small community in Fortune's Rocks, the fictional area in her home territory of New Hampshire ...

Review of Sea Glass - Anita Shreve

If you go down to the woods today.....

Advantages: Novel by Anita Shreve set in America
Disadvantages: May upset people.

Anita Shreve is an author that I enjoy, so I chose Light on Snow from some books my daughter was lending me for my holiday reading. Anita Shreve has written several brilliant novels and this was described as her most powerful novel. The Independent on Sunday wrote "that it touches the very deepest human emotions.....perceptive, gripping and ultimately exhilarating, this is a very fine book indeed." It is set in a country area in New England, in winter time, just before Christmas and written by Nicky looking back to when she was 12 years old and her father had left his job and their home and moved to a house miles from anyone when he lost his wife and baby daughter in an accident. He wasn't coping well and Nicky had to do many of the household chores, her father started to make furniture using wood from their grounds, although wasn ...

The Garden of Eden!

Advantages: great read
Disadvantages: none

Eden Close is the second Anita Shreve novel I have read after being very impressed with Strange Fits of Passion. I was not at all disappointed with this latest read although I was expecting something a bit different as mistakenly, before I read it, I was expecting Eden Close to be a place whereas in fact she is a young woman. The story is set in a small town in America and is in the present day although you have to bear in mind that this book was written in 1989. It does quite often have flashbacks to events that happened fifteen years before and these are crucial to what happens to the characters later on. A brief summary of the story is that Andrew returns to his family home after the sudden death of his mother. Whilst dealing with all the practicalities after a sudden death he keeps finding himself drawn back to the past ...
