the fantastic folio society!

Advantages: BRILLIANT QUALITY BOOKS!
Disadvantages: CAN BE A BIT EXPENSIVE

Oh how i love the folio society. i love them and yet at the same time, i hate them. Dont get me wrong, i dont hate them because they provide poor quality books and have bad service...no no no. i hate them because i cannot resist thier fantastic books! THE COSTS The cost per book can range from about £19 to anything up to/and over £100. generally most books cost about £25/£30. THE BOOK CATEGORIES ancient history Charles Dickens novels children's ...
...humour lure of the east memoirs and biographies mystery, thrillers and crime myths and legends poetry books science fiction short stories travel and exploration THE MEMBERSHIP I found a coupon clipping in a magazine to join the folio society along with my cheque for about £13 (£9.95 plus postage)eagerly awaiting my selection of five fairytale collection books worth £156.75 and my free gift of a set of two greek myths books. BFC-AVOID AT ALL COSTS UNLESS YOU WANT A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN!!!!

Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Send you books you never ordered in unmarked packaging so you accept them without realising.

...come in boxes clearly marked Books for Children). I accepted the package, not knowing what it was and was surprised to see that BFC had sent me the Editor's Choice even though I had written on my initial order form that I did not require it. The return charges were extortionate and I refused to be forced to keep a collection of over-priced books I had not even ordered. I called their 0844 telephone number and when they heard it was a complaint, put ...
...ordered the minimum number of books I needed to according to the terms and conditions and asked them to close my account. The books turned up incredibly quickly (shame the labels or courier were not that efficient). Funnily enough, they all of a sudden offered to make my account more "flexible" by not having the editors choice facility on there even though they had previously said it was not possible to remove it and I would have to "opt out" each ...

Grolier - Don't fall for it!!

Advantages: NOT ONE!!
Disadvantages: Stress, time consuming, terrible customer service, very frustrating!

About 3 months ago i purchased a magazine with a flyer in for Grolier books. It said i could get a welcome pack with 2 free bob the builder books and dvd's and in with these would come the next 2 in the series for me to look at. If i liked them and wanted to keep the books i would be charged for them and would recieve the rest of the set, 2 books at a time, every 4 weeks or so. Sounds good i though, 2 free books, nothing to pay and no commitment ...
...a month later i hadn't received the first pack with the free books but in the post came the next 2 books with a statement which charged for the 2 books that should have been in with the free ones. The ones that had never arrived. I logged onto the website, registered my details, its the only way you can email them and phoning costs money, and sent them an email. I received no reply but a few days later i did get a prepaid postage label so assumed ...

A very good source of cheap books.

Advantages: An interesting range of books offered, with no strings attached.
Disadvantages: (Unless you're a parent) Too many childrens' books.

I can't remember how I first got introduced to The Book People, but for two or three years now I've looked forward to seeing their catalogue in the post every couple of months. The Book People don't call themselves a 'book club' as they don't ask people to join up, they don't have any minimum purchase requirements and they will never send you unsolicited book choices, as some clubs do. Books for children and young people are always at the front ...
...the pages. I don't have any children to buy for, so these pages are of peripheral interest to me; I do note, however, that they seem to contain a balanced mixture of educational books, e.g. history, and childrens' fiction. The adult books are a mixture too. About half of them are "how to" books: cookery, diets, gardening, hobbies... I've bought a couple of cookery books from them by popular authors. The other books are mainly fiction, including ...

World Books? More like World CROOKS! Beware!

Advantages: You get some mediocre books for a few pence, at first.
Disadvantages: They try every legal way possible to trick you into buying things you don't want.

World Books? More like World CROOKS! Luckily I got out of doing business with them after just less than a year. I too was tempted by the 'Get XX books for just 1p' introductory offer, so much so that I went ahead and got myself some interesting reads. Okay, it was my fault for not reading the small print and noticing the condition that you have to buy a certain number of books priced £4.99 or more from them within 12 or 18 months (I can't remember). ...
