Advantages: good soundtrack, good first 30 mins, good special effects, ok storyline Disadvantages: comical in place when it was intended to be serious, dire acting standards, no reference to title, weak characters
It is almost expected now for sequels to never live up the expectance created by the first film. Yet the Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows was quite simply a complete let down an almost all accounts. The Blair Witch Project was original, groundbreaking and above all the best psychological horror movie ever released.
However, I think that to even describe Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows, as a horror movie is an injustice. Horror movies are frightening either visually or especially in the case of the Blair Witch Project psychologically scary. Yet Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows was neither.
I recall buying preview screening tickets to watch the film the day before it was release to the general public. I sat in the cinema and with almost every other person there laughing at what I saw as if it were a comedy, this is no lie ...
Advantages: Starts well, setting up an interesting idea. Disadvantages: Completely fails to deliver.
, and that opinion has merit, but personally I was impressed with the Blair Witch Project. It is one of the few films that made me shout out 'Oh Fcuk!' quite unwittingly at its final scene. You can watch your 'Screams' and jump and shout, but ultimately you giggle at such teen flicks. I did not giggle at 'Blair Witch'. I shivered.
Neither did I giggle at 'Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows'. I sighed...
So what went wrong?
Of course, regardless of your opinion of BW1, you'd have to admit that a sequel would prove difficult. It had all the hallmarks of a one-off. Innovative (or rubbish - depending on opinion) filming, a documentary style realism, an intriguing story, a cult following manipulated by the internet. BW2 was already going to lose.
But to what extent? A valiant fight decided on points, or a first round knockout?
Let's see ...
Advantages: Well written, clever characterisation Disadvantages: Got confused about who was who
It has taken me at least a week to read it (unusual for me, I'm a quick reader) and I must say I'm not entirely sure what to make of it. The Shadow of the Wind is one of those books which I think is a slightly acquired taste, and you need to be in the right mood to read it. Perhaps a second read is the key.
The story opens with the ten year old boy, Daniel, being shown a great secret by his father. A library of lost books, where the tradition is for new visitors, who only visit on invitation from another, to take a book. They then have a duty to keep it safe and prevent it being lost in the sands of time. Ten year old Daniel takes a book, Shadow of the WInd written by a man named Julian Carax. Little does Daniel know, his selection leads him down a path where there is no turning back. His curiousity gets the better of him and he sets ...
