Warning - Booking .com advertices rooms at as much as 70% discount, when you in fact may end up paying +30% of the going rate. The categorisation you see is managed by the hotels themselves and may be completely untrustworthy. Read our story below...
We booked Prisma Caribe, playa del Carmen through their internet service in good trust since they guaranteed the lowest prices.
Upon arrival we were presented for the bill, which turned out to be 130 us $ which was + 30% of the hotels normal rate of 100 us $.
To ad to the pain the hotel was far from the 4 star category promised;
-Shabby interior and decoration, -a fan that threatened to fall down when rotating at higher speeds, -an old aircon making so much noise that we couldn’t having it on if we wanted to sleep -a room smelling of mole -a toilet which was running all the time
To our knowledge based on our many years of experience as travelers this hotel can by no means be categorized as more than a two star hotel.
We presented the fact to the owner, with no result what so ever. He felt that he was in his right to take this 30% overprice of the normal rate.
Booking.com guarantees lowest price, but they refused to cover this difference. Yesterday I saw the same hotel at booking.com advertised with a 70% discount... looking closer at the room rate the price had been even more inflated
