so many places to visit so little time

There are literally hundreds of search engine type websites to help you choose everything you need for your holiday from hotels to car hire and flights. In this day of technology making everything supposedly easier for us with such a large selection it's sometimes hard to know which one to choose. For me when I'm looking for a hotel I always use booking.com to make my selection as it's the one I trust the most and the one I think is most user friendly.

The website is a hotel search engine where hotels and guest houses pay to advertise their accommodation on the site.
The layout is really easy and user friendly to use and unlike a lot of these sites the information is laid out in a way that is both simple to understand and intuitive to use so there is no going round in circles trying to find what you are looking for. On the main page there is a box which asks you to enter the place you are visiting and the dates and then the site will show you all the hotels it has available on the dates you selected. Booking.com say they have nearly 90,000 hotels worldwide on their site and while I don't know if this is true I do know that no matter where I've been visiting they have a really good selection of hotels.

The Hotels then come up on a list in order of popularity but you can then specify from a drop box what order you would like them from stars high to low and price high to low or vice versa.
The selection of properties are really good with everything from 5 star luxury hotels to youth hostels and B&B's so there is an option for every budget. They claim that there site is the cheapest and the hotels have to agree to lower their standard rate when advertising and when you click on the hotel it usually shows you their normal rate and the rate they are charging on booking.com. Now I am a little skeptical about this claim as I have booked before on booking.com and then been on the hotel website where the price is the same but sometimes you can get a really good hotel at a bargain price.
On the side of the page next to the hotels it also gives you a list of all the main sites in your chosen city and the distance in km that they are from the hotel which I always find really helpful when planning a short break. You can also choose to look at only hotels that have a specific feature that is important to you such as a swimming pool or one that is close to a particular site you are interested in.
You can also choose as to which currency you want to see the hotel in so if it is an obscure currency or a difficult to convert one then the site will change it to pounds for you if you select the option.

When you see a hotel on the list you like the sound off you can click on it to get a detailed overview. There are a few standard pictures of the hotel and the rooms, facilities etc and some written details about the hotel but be careful with this as these are written by the hotel themselves. It will also show you what rooms they have available on you dates and what you get with it such as if breakfast is included. They also give information about the hotel and its policies such as whether it has a 24 hour reception, car parking etc. A nice feature is that each hotel has a map that you can click on to see its distance in relation to the sites and centre of town.
You should check this to see what the conditions of booking are as it will tell you what their cancellation policy is and the check in/out times.
Always always always check out the reviews from the other guests who have stayed here to get an unbiased opinion on what the hotel is really like. These reviews are great and I always make sure I read them but try to take some who have rated the hotel low with a pinch of salt unless they have gave a good valid reason as some people just like to complain and it really annoys me when I see people rating a hotel really low for something that the hotel has made clear in its details. Read the comments people make not just how many stars they have awarded it.

When it comes to booking it is a complete cinch, you just select the room you want and then fill in your details and what card you are using to guarantee your room. Booking.com does not charge your card anything and the hotel will not take any payment until after your stay there unless you have got a cheap promotion where it states you have to pay in advance. The credit card is just to protect them if you don't show up without cancelling. If you have any special requirements such as wanting a smoking room there is a comment box for you to tell the hotel. It's a secure site so your details are safe and booking.com will email you the confirmation that you can print out.

There are many reasons I always use booking.com I have never had a problem with any of my reservations when using them, the website is easy to use and one of the big advantages it has over hotels.com for instance is that is gives you the full price for your booking on the search page unlike with hotels.com where it gives you an average night price that I just find annoying.
All in all I can wholeheartedly personally recommend this site as it is the only one that I would consider using when booking accommodation.

Nice write-up! I prefer GTA though (Gullivers Travel Assocaites) for when booking hotels in the UK as they are generally cheaper!

They are quite good, we used them on our trip to Austria last year.
