I have dark brown hair and I am ashamed to say that I have always secretly envied those who have fair hair. You know the ones I am talking about - those who are fortunate to be able to go a whole fortnight without having to shave their legs or armpits because the hair is less noticeable and once they shave they don't get the dreaded 5 o'clock shadow! But for me, I need a little help in this department from bleaching creams to bleach the hair on my top lip which is not particularly dark, however when I wear make up it seems more noticeable (well to me anyway!).
Luckily I have never resorted to waxing, shaving or using depilatory creams to remove the hair above my lip, as this makes it grow back thicker
and darker. I have used Jolene bleaching cream in the past but had to stop using this as I had a reaction to it. In my search for hair lightener I came across Boots Expert Hair Lightener two years ago and have used it ever since.
Boots Expert Hair Lightener is used to bleach the hair on your face or body. It won't make it disappear but it will make it less noticeable. It is a fuss free kit which works in 10 minutes. It is quick, easy and safe to use. Boots Expert Hair Lightener can be found in the hair removal section next to Veet and Jolene Cream products and costs £4.99 for 2 x 50ml or £3.49 for 2 x 25ml. The hair lightener comes in a White cardboard box with a picture of a woman's lower face on it.
How to apply a) It is recommended that you wash the area you want to bleach with soap and cold water and pat dry before applying. In my experience it is better to leave it 10 minutes or so before applying the bleach, as the bleach will irritate your skin if your pores are open.
b) If you are bleaching the hair on your top lip or stomach, squeeze equal amounts of the bleaching cream and accelerator cream into the mixing tray. A 5p size blob of each is enough. You then have to mix the cream together which forms a runny paste. I always find it better to leave the paste for about 5 minutes before applying it, as this allows time for the cream to thicken slightly and it clings to your skin better.
c) You then apply using the spatula covering all the hairs and make sure that you don't rub it in as this will again irritate your skin.
For dark hair you can leave the cream on for 10 minutes (but no longer than this), with the top lip I tend to check every 3 minutes or so and remove using the spatula and then reapply. I find that this is effective at making sure that all the hairs are bleached, as you will find that if you leave the cream on for 10 minutes, the cream rises slightly and has lots of air bubbles in it and it doesn't cover all the hairs.
I find the hair lightener very effective when bleaching your top lip or stomach hairs (something I have noticed since becoming pregnant!!). I like the fact that the hair lightener actually lighteners the hairs, rather than turning it slightly orange, like other cream bleaches. I use the cream once a month, so buying the 2 x 50ml box is cost effective and can last for several months.
As the cream can be used on your body I have tried using it on my armpits, just to see if it works, however found that because the hairs are a lot thicker due to shaving it wasn't very effective and needed to stay on a lot longer than the recommended 10 minutes. Even then it only turned the hairs slightly orange in colour.
The hair lightener is easy to use as all you need to do is squeeze equal amounts of the cream into the mixing tray and apply with a spatula. There is no need to add bleaching powder (which goes everywhere) to the accelerator cream unlike Jolene bleach.
Overall, I think that Boots Expert Hair Lightener is great value for money at £4.99. Other than making sure that the cream does not come into contact with material and fabrics, there are no disadvantages to the product. It is very quick and easy to use; no fuss involved at all and is safe. The hair lightener makes hair become less noticeable and works so well that I only have to use it once a month, so doesn't take up a lot of time in your beauty regime.
Some cautions to be aware of: don't use immediately after a bath or a shower as your skin will be more sensitive due to open pores, not to be used on broken skin or sensitive parts of the body, if you find that your skin is tingling you may be sensitive to the hair lightener and will need to remove immediately and wash the area with tepid water.
