Advantages Tastes okay. Works to an extent. Price.
Disadvantages Works best with lozenges. Doesn't work well for all cough types.
I have used as Boots Glycerin Honey & Lemon Linctus on a number of occasions when I have had a cough or a core throat. A 200 ml bottle of Boots Glycerin Honey & Lemon Linctus costs £2.25 from Boots, and this equates to 22p per dose for an adult. It doesn't sound like a bad price, because even if you take it at the full recommended dose of 4 times a day, this means that it would cost just 88p per day.
Using the linctus is easy. It's just a matter of administering 10 mls (two teaspoons) every 6 hours for as long as needed. The linctus is quite thick and gloopy and it tastes heavily of honey, although I can't smell or taste the lemon at all. The linctus tastes fairly pleasant and actually as the linctus is being swallowed it is really soothing as the mixture is going down. I would say that it does relieve the scratchy pain associated with a sore throat, but not as much as some other lozenges and so I tend to use it in combination with lozenges. I would say that in terms of a sore throat then it will relieve the symptoms by about 50%. For a cough, the linctus does help relieve the symptoms of a dry cough, but not of a chesty cough - and so I will pick and choose when I use it.
Overall, I think this product works fairly well. It does not stand out to me as anything that different from many other products that are available, but it is cheaper in terms of price.
