Giving birth is the most amazing thing I have ever done in my life and even though it is beautiful and a wondrous experience it is very messy and unpleasant and involves lots of blood. Both times I have given birth they have been vaginal deliveries so I can't comment on C-section deliveries but one of the essential products you will need are some maternity pads. I was fortunate to know this piece of information before I gave birth the first time and so stocked up on lots of these Boots maternity pads.

After birth you are still very sore down below and have blood loss for a number of reasons, some being that you may have been cut to give the baby more room to come out and also just left over blood from the placenta and all the other things going on under there. The first couple days are the heaviest and sometimes I would find that if I had been sitting for a while and then stood up I would definitely feel some gushing and was very thankful to have a big thick towel there protecting my modesty!

I took a couple of packs of these pads to the hospital with me as they are one of the first products you will use pretty soon after birth and after you get all cleaned up. For me it was lovely to have a shower, put my underwear back on and have the protection of this towel. I recommend. Taking a few packets as you will want and probably need to change them every hour or so, at least in the first couple of days.

Boots maternity pads can be found in the baby section in most Boots stores along with the breast pads and paper knickers etc. they are basically just a big thick sanitary towel but I would recommend getting these as opposed to regular sanitary towels as they are tailored specifically for after birth and are a bit cheaper than a pack of regular towels.

The pads come in a pack of 10 and cost £1.05 so very cheap in my opinion. They are not individually wrapped but I think the plastic wrapping they come in are enough to keep them clean and hygienic. The pads are very thick, soft and absorbent and are actually very comfortable to wear. They are the same size from front to back and are quite long so they have a good coverage area. They have a contoured absorbent core and I never once had a leak whilst wearing these. The back has a sticky strip on it and once you peel away the bit of paper protecting this the pad sticks easily to your underwear and they stay in place nicely.

I had to wear these for about three weeks after birth and highly recommend them for your hospital bag!
