Boots Mild Vapour rub was something that I was pleasantly surprised by, my 4 year old was full of a cold over the hectic christmas period so over the weekend I bought him some Boots Dry Cough syrup and this vapour rub with the intention to take him to the doctors on the monday if he was no better. I didn't intend to buy a mild vapour rub and to be honest was in a rush so picked up the cheapest one on the shelf. The vapour rub was priced at £1.95 and came in a brightly coloured green box. It was only when I got home I realised it was the mild vapour rub and for those of you familiar with childrens medicines it's the boots version of 'snufflebabe'.

My Experience:

On removing the white plastic pot of vapour rub from the box, I quickly read the directions for use on the label, the same information is also printed on the box. I've used these sorts of products before but not for a while! The label says to massage gently onto the chest and back, especially at bedtime and to leave bed clothes loose so that the vapours can be inhaled during the night. It was bedtime so I applied the rub whilst tucking him into bed that night. The rub itself is an ointment, white in colour and soft to touch, i'm not a big fan of ointments, hate the greasiness so was quite happy to just dip one finger in and try not to get my hand covered in the stuff!
I applied the ointment to my sons chest first and found it surprisingly easy to rub in and not as greasy as I expected, it spread out very easily over his chest. I then repeated this and applied it to his back, at this point he was laughing because of the cold sensation caused on the skin from the menthol, I remember it well as a child been plastered in Vicks Vaporub by my mum! I then pulled his top back down and off he went to sleep.
Being a mild vapour rub I expected it not to smell very strong and maybe not to be as effective as traditional Vicks but the product was very good. I could certainly smell the vapour from it in the room when I checked on him and liked the fact that it didn't seem as greasy as Vicks.

The Results

I'm not about to claim that this vapour rub got rid of my sons cold as we all know a cold is a cold and it will go when its ready but it did help to relieve his symptoms mainly by clearing his stuffy nose and allowing a better nights sleep than the previous couple of nights. So in turn a better nights sleep allows the body to rest and recouporate. I used the vapour rub on him for just two nights and after that he didn't need it, or to go to the doctors for that matter! I would recommend this product as it was great value and just as good as the branded alternatives, it is a traditional type of remedy and an good option for people who prefer not to give there child oral medicines. It is marketed as a mild vapour rub and sold in the childrens medicines section but I would use it on myself rather than buying two different vapour rubs, it's a good all round product that could be used for the whole family.
