Advantages Suitable for dry, sensitive skins and eczema, fragrace free, lanolin free
Disadvantages None that I have found
Much to my surprise, my baby boy was born with very little hair. He must have inherited this of his father’s side of the family because my side have all been blessed with an abundance of the stuff.
Anyway, when he did eventually get some lovely blonde baby hair I started to shampoo it with the Johnson & Johnson’s shampoo I had brought during pregnancy. Before long his scalp began to look dry and it started to show signs of cradle cap developing. I could only put it down to the product I was using as I had found Alex’s sensitive skin did not like any of the other Johnson’s and Johnson’s products I had used on him.We had already started using the Boots brand of wipes for sensitive skin but upon browsing the shelves in the baby care section I noticed a whole range of products for baby sensitive skin which claimed to be “clinically tested suitable for dry skin and eczema”. In this range there is a scalp moisturising shampoo that is hypoallergenic, consultant dermatologist and paediatrician approve and is also tearless.
The bottle I get is 200ml and costs £3.75. It is a white bottle that is shaped for your hand to give you a good grip when you have slippery wet hands, it has a blue flip top cap which is easy to open with one hand (essential if you are to keep one hand on your wriggly baby at all times) and the writing on it is predominantly blue with some yellow. On the back it tells me that the shampoo is ph neutral, fragrance free and lanolin free and it is suitable for frequent use. There is a full listing of the ingredients and it claims to leave your baby’s hair “looking soft and shiny, whilst the added moisturisers gently nourish and protect baby’s delicate skin” Directions are; - Wet hair and massage a little shampoo into the hair and scalp. Rinse thoroughly. The shampoo has no discernable smell and a very small amount is needed to give you a good lather. It rinses easily and lives up to its claim to be tearless. After just a few applications Alex’s scalp was showing definite signs of improvement and before long the cradle cap and dryness was all gone. His hair looked shiny and it was lovely and soft.
I have used this shampoo on Alex ever since because I know it does the job well and will not irritate his scalp. I do not really know how the price compares with other baby shampoos but I am assuming it is more expensive than a lot of alternatives but I am happy to of found something that works and is gentle on his skin. Besides one bottle goes a long long way. Alex is 14 months now and we are only just starting our third bottle.
