*** This isn't actually the Insect Repellent variety, it's a review of the original Aftersun product. I asked Ciao to add a listing for the Aftersun and they told me it existed right here - even though this isn't it!***

Boots Soltan Aftersun lotion - 12 Hour Moisturising Aftersun Lotion

I went on a 6-week trip to California this summer and anticipated needing plenty of Aftersun to put on my sunburn. As it happens the sun cream I used (Boots Soltan SPF 50+) withstood the test and I had very little sunburn, but I still went through plenty of Aftersun.

I chose the Boots Soltan Aftersun lotion mainly because it was the same brand as the sun cream I chose, and because it was on offer at the time.

~ - ~ Soltan ~ - ~
Soltan is the Boots own brand sun protection and as such is only available from Boots stores. The sun cream products are in yellow/orange bottles and the after sun range is in a 'cooling' blue color. There are both Lotions and Sprays available, and there are several variations of Aftersun - insect repellent, tan maximiser, kids, baby, aloe vera and some others. I have the original kind.

The lotion comes in 200ml and 400ml bottles and, during the summer, most of the range is on Buy One Get One Free offers. I paid £3.97 for my 200ml bottle (well, for two of them because of the offer). 400ml bottles are £6.99 and were also included in the offer. (My store didn't have any of the larger bottles or I would have gotten these instead.)

~ - ~ Use and Effectiveness ~ - ~
This Aftersun does exactly what it claims - it 'cools and soothes skin'. It claims to work for 12hours but on the most extreme sunburn I found I wanted to use it much more frequently, more like every 30minutes! It did cool the temperature of my skin down instantly. It was easily and quickly absorbed into the skin and didn't take too much rubbing to make it soak in. I found that to make its effect last longest, I actually didn't rub it in at all. Rather I left puddles of it on my skin and waited for it to be absorbed naturally.

The Aftersun absorbed into my hands quickly, which I liked a lot as I hate having greasy hands. It made the skin very soft to the touch while it was soaking in.

I found I got the most sunburnt on my face, and this product does help that very effectively. Like I mentioned before, to get the most relief I put large patches across my cheeks and didn't rub them in.

When desperate, I have also used this just as a moisturiser and it works well to hydrate the skin, without sunburn.

I only peeled a very small amount and for a short time after being burnt quite badly. Using a lot of Aftersun did cut down the amount I peeled, and the time it took to heal from the burn.

~ - ~ Scent ~ - ~
This product doesn't really have any scent aside from 'that Aftersun smell'. It's relatively pleasant while applying and stays around for a short time afterwards.

~ - ~ Bottle ~ - ~
The Boots Soltan products are all packaged in the same bottles. With the Aftersun, the lid of the bottle got very messy, as the product itself is so runny. The bottle has travelled around with me, so the mess on the lid has also attracted dirt to it.

~ - ~ Lotion Verses Spray ~ - ~
I have not tried the spray of this product, but of the few sprays I have borrowed from other people, I much prefer the lotion. I find it much easier to get the lotion to where it needs to be rather than spraying and hoping to aim for the right spot!

~ - ~ Use It Again? ~ - ~
I would defiantly buy this brand again. I am very happy with the results I saw, the relief it brought from the burning, and the extent of the peeling. It is also pleasant to use.

The two bottles I bought at the beginning of the summer are now only around one third of one bottle. I have gone through it much faster than the sun cream I bought at the same time, but then again, maybe if I'd used more sun cream I would have used less Aftersun!

I believe this product is a good value for money, for the length of time it has lasted and the amount you need to use.
