I love freebies. A few weeks ago I was in Boots, and whilst I was at the check-out, I was given a pile of about 20 sachets of their “new” Children’s suntan lotion. Ciao calls this lotion “Boots Soltan Childrens Sensitive Skin Lotion” however, Boots have re-branded this to “Soltan Kids”, which is why I guess they were calling it new! Since I was given so many packets of it, I feel that I have had sufficient experience of it to write an op on it – so here goes!
-=Packaging=- Since I have the freebie version, my packaging will not be the same as the one you will find on the shelves, but I’ll tell you about it anyway, so that you get a rough idea of what to look for (except it’ll be in a bottle form). I have a small rectangular foil sachet – the sort of thing that would come free in a magazine. It’s yellowy-orange in colour and says “Soltan Kids Apple” on the front. There is also a little picture of an apple on the front.
-=Smell and Appearance=- When you rip the packet open, a gorgeous Apple-y smell wafts up to your nose – it’s a very pleasant smell, and I wouldn’t be ashamed to wear it myself. The actual lotion is the same as most other suntan creams, it is quite thick, and the only real difference is the colour – it is a pale green colour. The colour kind of reminds me of fresh mint toothpaste! The smell lingers for quite a long time – I can still smell it on my hands several hours after I have applied to my son, so you would have to really like the smell, otherwise it might be quite unpleasant!
-=Using the cream=- Before we go any further, this cream is meant for children over the age of 18 months – I’m not sure why, but it’s better to be safe than sorry, so you are buying this for someone else, check the age of the child. Lots of suntan creams (especially the ones meant for kids) have “age restrictions” on them, so you should look at the bottle before you buy it.
My son thinks that it is great fun to slap the funny green cream all over him – it has become a bit of a game, so I have no problems getting it on him! A few days ago, my sun got slightly burnt on the tops of his arms after using another suntan lotion, and he now says that this cream “makes me all better” – he has not been burnt at all since using this cream, but then it is a factor 30. It has four stars for maximum protection against UVA, which has to be good doesn’t it? There is also UBV sunscreens in the lotion, but I have no idea as to how protective they are. The cream also contains vitamin C for extra protection. I must admit that, this cream has been great so far, and I am pleased with all of this “added protection” business – it certainly puts my mind at rest!
The cream is very easily absorbed, and although the packet says that it meant to leave you with an initial green colour, so you can “check missed bits”, you are kept totally green-free. I found that roughly one “trial size” (or free to you and me) packet was enough to cover the entire skin showing on my son (for an idea of how much cream that was, he is 2, and was wearing a shorts and t-shirt). I like using the little individual packets, because then you can be certain of how much of the cream you have used – I don’t know why Boots don’t just bring out boxes of the sachets – they would be very handy for travelling purposes – just throw a few into your bag, and away you go.
You are meant to re-apply this cream every 1-2 hours and/or after swimming (whichever is the sooner I suppose); which I’m pretty certain is standard for most suntan lotions. It is meant to be water resistant, so you should still be protected whilst in the water – my son went for a bit of a paddle whilst wearing the cream, and he didn’t get burnt whilst he was in the water, so things should be fine if you were at the beach/ outdoor pool etc.
The cream is hypoallergenic and dermatologically tested, so it should be okay for those with sensitive skin – my son is prone to the odd bout of dry skin/rash, and so far the cream has had no adverse affects on his skin.
Even though this cream has quite a high factor, my son still came back with a bit of colour, so if you're an adult and want to use this, you would not be devoid of any colour at all!
-=Cost and Availability=- Since this is a Boots own brand product, you can only buy it in Boots (Quelle Surprise). For the 200ml “Trigger Spray”, it is £10.99, or there is a 100ml spray for £5.50. There is also a version that is factor 60, for those that burn for even looking at the sun! The price might be a bit steep, but I think that it is well worth it!
-=Conclusion=- Once all the packets have been used up, I shall definitely be buying another bottle, it smells nice, easily absorbed and kids don’t seem to mind it either! I don’t normally spend so much on suntan cream, but I think I will make an exception this time. Thanks for the read, and take care in the sun :)
