Personally I am not fussed about what self-tanning lotion I use. I dont mind about the brand name too much as long as it has a natural colour and I certainly dont think that brand names have anything to do with whether it streaks or not. You want to know why? Ok, I'll tell you. I tried three differently priced self-tanning lotions:
The cheap one gave a nasty orange colour, the medium priced one had a nice brown colour that look very natural when it had dried and the expensive one had a gorgeous brown colour that after a few applications made me look like I had spent a week in Majorca! (Although, as you can imagine I looked a bit like a tangerine after using all these fake tans! The things I do for you Dooyoo people!) However, in proof of my point, none of them went streaky. I think that when you are looking for a quality self tan you should probably be prepared to spend a bit of money, just to get a lovely colour.
Anyway, one of my friends has spent over one hundred pounds on self-tanning products in search for the perfect one and says that she cannot find one that doesnt streak. I gave her two pieces of advice as follows:
1)Change the way you apply it. Most people apply the moisturiser, then the self-tanning lotion. I could never really do this very effectively and I always thought it took too long having to apply two different creams. I always ended up with slightly browner legs and bright orange hands! My advice is to build up a convincing fake tan by mixing moisturiser and fake tan in a 50:50 ratio in the palm of your hand (about a 10p sized blob of each will do the trick). Then mix it together and apply it to your body. For your face, mix more moisturiser and less fake tan in the ratio of about 70:30. If you do this for 2/3 days it will be gradually built up and look more natural (plus your friends wont be able to tell its fake so easily because there isnt that sudden change, it is built up gradually, as a natural tan would be!)
2)Use Boots Soltan Self Tanning Lotion available in three shades: -Light -Medium -Dark
This Boots Soltan is the medium priced variety that I tried and is undoubtedly the best compromise in price and colour. Like all the other Soltan self tanning lotions, it will fade gradually, is hypoallergenic and is suitable for your face and body. It only takes 2-3 hours for the colour to start to appear, is waterproof after 2 hours and it will last for days. It can be used at any time of year or can even be used to prolong an existing tan. You will probably find that the colour looks best if it is applied over an existing tan. The directions are simple and are provided clearly and simply in bullet points on the back of the bottle, just make sure that you exfoliate really well before you apply it so that it is even and lasts longer.
Want a secret? Wash your hands after use with a scrubbing brush. The first time I used a fake-tan product, I thouroughly washed my hands for at least five minutes after use but I didnt use a scrubbing brush and so I still had slightly orange hands. Also, make sure you scrub between your fingers too!
