Soltan was the first brand of fake tanning that I bought. I wanted to start safely tanning myself but didn't want to spend a lot of money on a product. I therefore decided to use the Boots own brand Soltan. I'm normally quite impressed with Boots own products and the price (at the time it was £5.99 for a 200ml bottle made me think it was worth giving it a go.
The product is very easy to apply - I just treat it as a normal body lotion. Howerve, you do have to take extra care with application. Areas such as the elbows and backs of the legs can be tricky and these are the most common places where you are likely to get streaky marks. To avoid this, I always make sure that I spend a bit longer on these areas - making sure that I rub it in a lot. It is also important to make sure that you wash your hands after application or you will end up with orange fingers (alternatively you can buy special tan application gloves to wear). However, I find it equally important to make sure I apply the fake tan to my hands after washing them. I do this by treating the tan as hand lotion. If you don't do this then you will end up with white hands but tanned arms.
When I use the tan for the first time in a while I tend to apply it once a day for approximately three days. I find that the tan will appear around the three day mark. After that, I use the product every few days or so just to maintain the tan.
The results that I get from the product are a very subtle but effective glow. I have had people tell me that I looked tanned after just a few applications of the stuff. I would say that this is therefore not the right product if you want an instantly dark tan. The bottle does say though that if you want a deeper colour, use it again 2 or 3 hours after first using it. I have not tried this so I can't comment on whether or not it provides a deeper tan.
By far the worst thing about the product is the smell. Lots of fake tan products have moved forward in terms of odour, but unfortunately Soltan is not one of them. Because of this reason, I use the product before I go to bed - I am rather wary that if I use it in the morning people will instantly know that I am smothered in the stuff.
Another drawback is that it can stain your clothes slightly, especially underwear. This is another reason why I use it before bed and not in the day.
I cannot comment whether or not this product is likely to irritate sensitive skin, although based on the smell alone I would guess that it may be quite chemically and so may not be suitable for people who suffer from allergic reaction.
This product is thoroughly recommended by me. It provides a natural looking tan and is very reasonably priced. I
t is important to remember that as is noted on the bottle, this product will not provide any protection from the sun.
