Lightning the budgie is a well loved pet, I’d hate for him to get bored and start plucking his feathers out, so he has a large number of toys that are regularly changed in his cage. But there’s one toy that stays in place and that’s his Olympic rings with bell. It’s his absolute favourite and something he will literally play with for hours each day.

Consisting of five brightly coloured plastic rings and a metal bell, Lightning finds countless ways of playing with his Olympic rings. Although the rings are easily and securely attached to the cage by a metal clip Lightning still spends a good few minutes everyday trying to detach them. He also stretches the rings across the cage and then lets go so they swing wildly and the bell rings. As luck would have it the bell isn’t too loud, but still loud enough to excite Lightning enough that he’ll have a good cheep.

But Lightning’s absolute favourite way of playing with the rings is also the funniest. He loves to weave through the rings, actually working his whole body through first one ring and then another, making the most of his innate acrobatic abilities. This never fails to make visitors laugh the first time they see it, and it still brings a smile to my face after watching him clown around for the fiftieth or more time.

The Olympic rings cost me the grand total of 99p in my local pet shop and are one of the best value toys I’ve bought for Lightning. So far they’ve survived two months of almost constant play with no sign they are going to break soon (although I do still check them everyday for signs of wear and tear). They provide Lightning with hours of mental stimulation and physical exercise and he loves them so much, he’s even been known to fall asleep half in and half out of a hoop.

The Olympic rings with bell is therefore highly recommended for any pet budgie (but is not suitable for larger birds), it is robust, brightly coloured and definitely gets Lightning’s seal of approval and a fantastic five stars out of five from me,
