"Can we fix it?".."Yes we can, even a broken leg!"
Advantages Fun for imaginitive play
Disadvantages Could be too babyish for older children
My 4 year old is not the biggest fan of dressing up, in fact at his nativity play this year he was the saddest, most forlorn donkey I've ever seen, however when the dressing up is on his own terms there's no stopping him and one of his favourite sets is the Bob The Builder tool set with Hat.
The set itself isn't so much fancy dress but rather a play set, it comes with a shopping style basket, a range of tools including saw, hammer, screw driver and screws and a yellow Bob hardhat. The set is made of thick plastic and is in bright primary colours of red, yellow and blue as well as green, the tools are a good size for younger children to use and Christopher finds them very easy and comfortable to play with, the hat only comes in one size and of course the fit will depend on the size of your little ones head as well as their age, Christopher has a particularly large head for a 4 year old and wears 8 year old sized hats but the bob hard hat fits him well. It's a great play set for imaginative play and it is lovely watching as Christopher potters around the house with his hard hat on pretending to fix doors, screw down carpet gripper bars, hammer in imaginary nails.............he even comes over all "crazy doctor" and tries to carry out operations on us grown ups and his teddies by "fixing" their limbs with use of the saw! Some of the plastic screws come with matching bolts which have to be wound onto the screws, they're quite chunky and easy for Christopher to fix on properly, it's great for their hand eye co-ordination though as they have to line up the screw and bolt, getting the thread correct.
The bright colours are attractive and stimulating for younger children while not being too childish for older Bob fans, the plastic is very durable and being wipe clean means a lot less work for mummies and daddies after their little handy man, or woman, has been busy at work with their tools. The basket is a great addition allowing you to keep all the bits together preventing tools being spread randomly throughout the house and also allows your little one to carry all the tools at once, which could otherwise be tricky for someone of Christophers age.Christopher can spend hours playing with the tool set despite it being quite a simple toy, it captures his imagination and fits perfectly with his Black & Decker toy workbench. We had the set bought as a gift however it is available from good toy stores including Toys r Us in the region of £10. There are more grown up looking sets available for older children as well as a workbench, tool belt and other accessories, this however is great as a starter set or if you're stuck for space but still want to give your little one a little Bob The Builder fun
