Imagine, if you will, this scenario: family of 5; both adults working; well-used 11 year old tumble dryer stops working in the middle of Winter; wet washing draped all over the house plus loads of towels transported to any friend or relative kind enough to offer use of their dryer. This was my family until a couple of weeks ago when I finally snapped and yelled " I've had enough - I need a new tumble dryer!". After the expense of Christmas and with rising fuel bills, I knew I would have to do my homework before purchasing.
Having spent a good few hours researching various makes and models I opted for this Bosch machine, largely, I have to say, based on its energy efficiency rating (B - don't think there are any dryers out there ranking A, not that I found anyway) and the reliability/durability of the Bosch brand. Yes, it was undoubtedly more expensive than a lot of others on the market but I felt it would be money well spent. So, was I right? It's still early days for me to comment on reliability but I am impressed by a number of things...
Sensor drying - a fantastic innovation in my opinion, the machine will automatically switch off when your load has reached the level of dryness you selected and not just run and run until the programme has finished.
Choice of "dryness levels" - iron dry (i.e. still pretty damp), cupboard dry (ready to go into the airing cupboard/slightly damp), very dry (just right/ready to wear) or extra dry (not tried this yet).
Super large drum able to take 7kg of washing and with rubber paddles to protect delicate fabrics.
Reverse tumble action - something my old machine did not have as I remember refusing to pay extra for it at the time! A useful feature in that the drum rotates one way then stops and changes direction, thus preventing that huge knot of bedding coming out which is still wet in the middle (very annoying!).
11 programme settings for different fabrics and levels of dryness, so plenty of choice.
Delayed start time - good if you want your load to finish just as you get in or wake up as the washing won't have been sitting around getting creased (anything to reduce ironing must be good!).
Reduced ironing button - when depressed the machine will keep the drum turning at intervals to prevent creasing.
Quiet in operation.
Fluff filter and water container both easy to empty and indicator lights remind you when this needs doing.
Weight - Not too heavy a machine so can, as mine does, sit on a shelf/ cupboard to bring it up to eye level.
And the one thing which I'm not so impressed with.... * The fluff filter opens out to be cleaned and I'm not sure how strong the hinge section will be over the long term. The machine is widely available both online and through several electrical retailers so it's worth shopping around to get the best deal. A word of caution though: the price does not usually include removal of your old dryer and this cost can vary from £10 to £20. So if you can't fit a dryer in your boot, read the small print carefully!
Finally, the verdict: was it worth the money? Yes I think it was. The machine does a fantastic job quietly and efficiently and looks good too! I would certainly recommend it to others looking for a reliable condenser dryer.
