WHAT DO I GET FOR MY MONEY?
The Companion 5 product consists of 2 small 'satellite' speakers for treble and a bass sub-woofer, which also acts as the amplifier. These speakers are NOT cheap. However they do give a very nice sound.

PRO's
As you would expect from a brand like Bose, your money has bought you a set of well put together speakers. The satellite units are small enough to be discreetly hidden if wanted. The sound quality is very good, with a nice depth to it, especially when you turn up the volume a bit.

We purchased a Slim devices Squeezebox 3 recently and needed some powered speakers to connect to it. CON's I think they are good speakers, but lack 'mid-range' sound slightly, and can also be quite 'bassy' at times. The only control on the back of the sub-woofer / amp is a bass level dial, and even turned down to the minimum the bass is still very noticeable in the overall sound. Of course this is dependant on the type of music you are listening to.
All in all I like the speakers a lot. I think the bass sub-woofer probably tends to dominate because we don't have it turnwed up very loud (we live in a modern build house with thin walls and don't want to naff off our neighbours). When the volume is turned up a bit the overall sound is very impressive.
Advantages: Quality of sound A+++ / Appearance Disadvantages: Cables are unnecerssarily long
I have had the Bose Companion 5 Speakers for a little while now and can honestly say I love them. I traded in my stereo for these as I tended to listen to my Ipod more then messing around with cds and have not looked back since. I was very happy to find that no docking station was required just simply connects as you would your head phones which was really handy for me and meant to extra cost to get started with using them. I think the quality of ...

Advantages: Excellent solution for listening to streamed audio from your pc or the internet Disadvantages: Not cheap, Initial setup issues, other equipment required
connect it to either an amplifier and speakers, or a set of powered speakers (e.g. like PC speakers). We bought some BoseCompanion5speakers.
A broadband internet connection - For skip-free streaming music from internet radio websites
A wireless router - To allow the Squeezebox to access the internet or your PC without having to run network cables all over your house.
PRO's
Once the config is complete, I like the SqueezeBox 3 for several reasons:
Wireless functionality - As with iTunes and mp3 players, more and more music is being stored and listened to in an electronic format (as opposed to CD). The Squeezebox is an excellent device to listen to that music.
Access to all electronic audio media - Rather than carting CD's round your house, convert your collection to mp3 files (free software to do this is available), then ...
