Listening to music troughout the day on an iPod requires a good set of earphones for it to be truly satisfying. Some people are content with standard headphones that simply do the job they were designed to do, but others would prefer to have the comfort and far superior sound quality that in-ear headphones provide. I am one of those people.
In May of this year (2008) I bought myself a pair of Sennheiser CX300's after being reccommended them by a relative. They were by far the best headphones I had used because of the comfort, noise reduction, sound quality and overall satisfaction. I could easily wear them for hours listening to music and not feel like they were digging into my ear. Mainly because they were well designed. Almost immediately after purchasing the headphones, my father purchased a bose iPod docking station which came with these headphones free. Naturally I wanted to compare them to see if they were any better.
I never really did get to test them because I always used my own pair. But recently, my Sennheiser headphones packed in after just 6 months. I don't quite know why, but I'm not particularly bothered. I'll get a new pair. But in the time between them breaking and me getting a new pair, I have been using the Bose in-ear headphones.
In May when I tried them, I was very impressed. They seemed large and looked a bit ugly. But now I've grown to like them somewhat. I still think they're big and ugly, but let's face it, they're a very nice fit. they come with adjustable rubber moulds, so people with little ears can use them, and people with large ears can use them. the rubber is very soft and doesn't irritate your ear at all, just moulds itself around the natural shape of your ear. Very comfy. I'm not too keen on the design of them though. The black and white cable is far from aesthetic and as mentioned before, the earpiece itself is large.
Soundwise, I'm mildly impressed. Comparing to what I have used, they are much better than Apple headphones, but still not a patch on Sennheiser, something which you wouldn't expect from such an accredited sound company as Bose. The actual audio playback sounds distant, as if you're standing in the middle of a large hall with speakers situated around the perimeter of the room. The Sennheisers gave the impression that the music was playing from right in the centre of your head. Like sitting in a cupboard surrounded by speakers. It was right there. I'm not too keen on the clarity of the playback either, it just doesn't seem as crisp as the CX300's. I've been using them for a week now and they still fail to win me over.
The price of them seems considerably steeper than the CX300's too, probably a good job they came free with the docking station. Seriously, if you want a good pair of headphones, for an acceptable price, that are comfortable and crystal clear - buy the CX300 headphones from Sennheiser. The Bose headphones are decent, but there are better out there.
