The headphones are closed back, over the ear type, with a very comfortable headband, and is very adjustable (even for my big head). You need to put one AAA battery in to the headphones though - but even with the battery, they are not overly heavy or bulky. I am getting more or less a month and a half of battery life out of them, with several hours constant use each day. You're not going to be paying a fortune in batteries.
I use a pair of these headphones every day at work, since I work in a cube farm, next to a production line. Not only do they deaden the noise of the line, but a lot of the background chatter from colleagues. Sadly, it doesn't have an anti-work function, when people come by my desk.
At first, it is unusual to hear the background noise fade away to near silence, but then if you start some music the headphones seem like the most natural sound source!
Listening to Verdi's Requiem today, even using my computer as a source, the bass was full and punchy, the top end was light, and crisp as appropriate. Vocals were crystal clear.
Moving on to house music, with synth sweeps and banging bass, again no clarity is lost even when the bass kicks in, the treble loses nothing.
Price wise, I picked my set up in the US, for a shade under $300, which is a bargain. The cans come in a zip up case, with a collection of adapters to suit most aircraft, an extension cable, and "courtesy cards" to hand to folk who ask you, and they will, about the headphones.
So, although these headphones are a bit pricey, they are well worth it - and you don't even have to be a frequent flyer to benefit from the noise cancelling capabilities. Just be prepared to have everyone in your office come round to listen to them.
Advantages: Great sound, hardly any background noise Disadvantages: the need for batteries, slightly comboursome
...Also the microphone system that bose use to cut out sound (i'll explain later) pick up russling and make an annoying buzzing sound in a lame attempt to cut out the sound. Apart from slight disadvantages, these headphones have been a saviour and I dont know what I would do without them.
The technology in the headphones is simple. On the outside of the headphones, on each earcup, there are two small microphones, so small that they can harldy be noticed. ... ...main control box (the box is only small, small enough to fit into your hand! so dont worry, it also holds the batteries!!!). This box then reverses the sound waves, thus cancelling the noise. It then places that reversed soundwave into the headphones and this creates a quiet hissing sound, commonly known as silence!!!!
Overall I would say that these headphones are going to be slightly cheaper than when they came out, and before buying these headphones ...

Advantages: Great sound, comfortable for long periods. Disadvantages: Bulky.
...my own noise cancelling headphones. Bose sets were (and still are) expensive so I bought Sony. However I found them uncomfortable to wear for long periods and took the plunge with Bose. They are so comfortable that I hardly notice them ( so much so, that I frequently get out of my seat forgetting to unplug them which tends to produce a smirk from fellow passengers). I keep them on throughout the entire flight to avoid hearing engine noise, just unplugging ... ...and First Class, but the Bose are far superior. Being enclosed, neighbours aren't irritated by your taste in music. I also use them as normal headphones, the quality and comfort being so good. The newer model is more compact, but you won't go wrong with these. All that is missing is a "screaming kid" cancelling device. ...

Quick review of Bose Quiet Comfort Noise Cancelling Headphones
I think they are very poor
Having had them for about 6 months, I now get an awful buzzing in the right can regardless of whether they are on setting 1 or 2. The buzzing is very loud and only goes away when i hold the shell of the can and press it closer to the headphones. Shocking really for the price. I cant hold the headphones at al times when they are in use and I don't really think that taping them up is any solution.. i searched google and many others have had this problem I put this down to very poor construction. I have been very careful to make sure they are put in their case when not used and they have been treated very well. ...

the volume control wheel (it saves the effort of having to take your player out of your pocket/bag etc in order to adjust the volume for those individual songs that can be either too loud or too soft), on/off switch for noisecancelling and a place for where the two AAA batteries reside.
The noisecancelling features is one that made me jump at the chance of giving them a go. As a commuter and some one who regularly travels abroad noisecancellation is a great feature. (Having since been bought a pair of BoseQuietComfort 2 headphones I find it incredibly hard to adjust to competing with ambient sound and music when using cheap headphones). For a pair of headphones that are on the market for under £30 (Digital Fusion) the noisecancelling works well. It removes the rumbles of the tube and the humming of the plane engines but the loud bangs ...
